Engineering 195: Engineering Challenges for the 21st Century

A lecture-discussion examining the evolution and effect of technologies on humanity, including the abilities of technology to both benefit and destroy humankind. Of particular interest is how scientific discovery leads to a new technology, how technology is developed and implemented and how it is controlled to the benefit society. The roles of the engineer in each of these activities are examined including not only the technical but also the ethical responsibilities of the engineer. Topics covered: nuclear and atomic energy, computers, telecommunications, nanosystems, biotechnology, global systems and artificial intelligence.

Fall 2000, Professor James Duderstadt

Excellent, just excellent. I took this class the first semester it was offered. We covered a great many topics relating to science, technology and society from many perspectives. I really had a lot of fun with this class and Professor Duderstadt was an excellent teacher.
