Miles has a dream in which he is standing by a wall watching everyone he knows stroll merrily off a cliff into the ocean. He yells at them, but they are too far away. He tries to go over to them, but he is shackled to the wall by his left wrist and can't get there... they all plummet into the sea.
Desiree awakens to find a sword of Damocles hanging over her, and just barely manages to deflect it from skewering her. She leaves it sticking in the pillow. Milton, sensing her pain when he returns to town, calls her up to talk.
Magda receives a message from the Seer and goes to court... he gives her a rose tracery to put on her scabbard to prevent the malificent energies of the tenth child from seeping out. She thanks him and does so. It feels a little better.
Sidonie awakens to find the fire truck has arrived and has a letter for her to give to Sinuous Fuzzlupper. Before that, they play some hide and seek, but the toy fire truck isn't very good. She goes to court and gives the letter to Fuzzlupper, who gives her a letter to return with and a frog. He tells her to put the frog in the ladies bath. She goes to the bath and a sidhe noblewoman casts a magic on the frog making it look much more impressive. Sidonie gives the frog back to the ferret pooka, and he is very impressed. And confused. Work done, Sidonie heads to Mallory's.
Miles, Desiree, and Milton are hanging out at Mallory's, and they go back to the Castle of Mirrors in the dreaming. Milton finds that the castle has an excellent library, and finds Magda's opponent in "The Big Book of Fomorians": its name is Forckas, and it was killed by Magda long ago with a magic sword. They ask some questions about how magic the mirror is and what's up with Sidonie not having a reflection in it, but little is concluded. Finally they head back to Mallory's and then home.
Desiree continues being depressed and Miles visits her aparment (which is dripping wet) at 3 AM to try to cheer her up. Desiree stays at Mallory's later - good thing Soraya is away in the Dreaming!
The next day Magda encouters the red thing - Forckas - again and is forced to fight it when it enchants her children and Sidonie's father. First Magda plows into it with her van (and plows into the side of her house too). Then she breaks her normal sword on it, then the bronze sword (which wounds it) and is unable to draw the tenth child. The surprise from that allows Forckas to get the drop on her and grab her. Luckily Milton arrives and shoots it with some bronze bullets allowing Magda to escape and strike off its arm with its own axe. Wounded but not dying Forckas makes its escape with the guard in hot pursuit. The police are called again and stories are told.
That night Sidonie and Milton search for other magic mirrors and end up in the remarkable wing, where they fail to look into the mirror of cutting but Sidonie does look into Amathea's mirror, which changes her to look like a beautiful Sidhe noblewoman. She goes to court and enjoys playing with everyone for a while (though she doesn't know the rules and is confused by some of the Count's advances). Milton eventually rescues her from the confusion.
Later in the week Desiree and Miles are at court when Victor is visiting the Countess. He's charming and quite dashing and the Countess seems to like him. Miles thinks he isn't so bad. Desiree wanders about with a kitchen knife for a while but is mostly calmed down when they actually meet and says nothing. That night she encouters him on the Harvard bridge, and he seems to want to resume their relationship, but doesn't want to push things. He hopes that she will get in touch with him when she's ready.
Finally, Magda has another dream in which the burning corpse of Arthur arrives and tells her she has once again armed her enemy against her. Arthur doesn't seem very pleased about being the messenger, and this visit is much shorter than the last. She discusses her dream with Milton who decides to do some research.
Carnival is only days away and the city is excited by the prospect of a big party...
