Examining the physical input to our eyes, ears, and skin reveals that the structure of our perceptual experience is not evident in that input. Rather, perception makes meaning: given those seeds of input, the mind builds experience in its multiplicity. At the same time, those constructive mechanisms -- organisms' perceptual systems -- presumably evolve to occupy some ecological niche, where they are shaped by light and sound while simultaneously making meaning of them. This mutually creative synthesis underpins a profound intimacy in experience, which motivates our study. How can science describe structuring by and of perception? Can we use that scientific understanding to generate experiences of that coupling? From this starting point, how can we understand shared experiences across human individuals, or across organisms in vastly different ecosystems? contact & context
