William ORFORD, b. ca. 1795, m1. 11 Feb 1818 by licence at Christ Church, Hunter Street,
Liverpool, Lancashire, Jane MANIFOLD (under age 21 at the
time of her wedding, daughter of James MANIFOLD), m2. 22 Dec 1825 at St. Helen's,
Witton, Cheshire,
Christian Ann HADFIELD, d. 21 Feb 1830. In 1818, a merchant, of Liverpool. William's
first marriage in 1818 was witnessed by his wife's father and by Edward H. GRIFFITH (relationship unknown). In 1819, a
glass manufacturer in Liverpool. In Nov 1819, together with partner William Foster, who was also a glass manufacturer,
purchased land on the east side of Vauxhall Road, Liverpool. Listed in
Gore's 1825 Directory of Liverpool as a merchant at 10 Beau Street. The same directory in 1827 lists him as a glass
manufacturer at 11 Beau Street, and in 1829, as a glass manufacturer at 10 Beau Street. All three directories, along with
Pigot's 1828-1829 National Commercial Directory, list the Orford and Foster glass bottle works at 190 Vauxhall Road.
Baines's 1825 Directory of Lancashire calls him a "merchant, etc." but is otherwise the same as its competitors. In
1828, William's daughter's baptism record calls him a broker, of Beau Street. In 1830, his posthumous son's baptism record
calls him a merchant, of Beau Street. William died without a will, so four months later when his only son was born, the
baby inherited his real estate. A private act of parliament was required to enable the sale of the Vauxhall Road land and
associated buildings before the son reached the age of 18. The act stated that such sale "would be for the immediate
Benefit and Advantage" of the son because of "the rapid Extension of the Town of Liverpool", which had caused "all Land
applicable to the Purpose of Building" to "greatly increase in value". Trustees (relatives of William's widow Christian)
were to sell the Vauxhall Road property and invest the proceeds in other real estate on the son's behalf. [ref. 6a,6h,10,19,43a,43b,43c,43d,43f]

In 1781, listed in Bailey's Northern Directory as a miller, of Dee Mills, Chester. Made his will on 21 Feb 1803,
describing himself as "William Orford of the City of Chester Esquire". In it he bequeathed his "messuages, mills, lands,
tenements, and hereditaments" to his daughter Mary and left her an additional £1,200 in trust to trustees Thomas LEE
(sail canvas maker, of Warrington) and William SPEAKMAN (gentleman, of Kingsley, Cheshire). Lee and Speakman were also
named as executors, along with Mary, and were bequeathed five guineas each. Any remainder of the estate was bequeathed
directly to Mary. The will was proved on 30 May 1805, William's estate having been sworn to be under £2,000.
William's attorney and his daughter Mary had to swear an affidavit that Thomas LEE named in the will was the same person
as Thomas LEIGH, sail canvas maker of Warrington (see below), with whom Mary was "very well acquainted", whose wife was "a
relation to her" (her aunt), and who "was invited to and attended" William's funeral. In 1812 (posth.), a

Park Lane and in Gore's directory as a ship broker at 74 St. James Street with an office at 9 Park Lane. In 1813,
described in the will of his brother James's widow as a broker, of Liverpool. In 1813 and 1814,
listed in Gore's directory as a ship broker at 96 St. James Street, with an office (Thomas Orford, Son, & Co.) at 36

A daughter, probably one of the above, m. James CARTWRIGHT. (See entries for James ORFORD, apothecary chr. 1751, above,
and for John ORFORD, yeoman of Runcorn, below. Or did John's phrase "brother in law" really mean stepbrother?)
John ORFORD, m. Elizabeth. A tenant of Peter Legh the Elder of Lyme. John made his will on 28 Aug 1768, describing
himself as a yeoman, of Runcorn, Cheshire. It directed that
"two Flatts in the Town-fields" be sold to discharge his debts, with the remainder of the estate to go to his widow
Elizabeth for her lifetime, and after her death to be divided equally among his three daughters Catharine, Mary, and
Betty. It named Thomas BOYER (of Weston, in the parish of
Runcorn) and James CARTWRIGHT ("my Brother in law", of Sankey,
Lancashire) as executors. The will was proved on 23 Oct 1773 by James CARTWRIGHT. [ref. 4c,12]
Richard ORFORD, b. ca. 1731, m. 6 Oct 1767 at
Prestbury, Cheshire, Nancy GASKELL (of Prestbury),
d. 27 Feb 1790, bur. at Winwick, Lancashire. In 1760,
appointed steward of Peter Legh the Younger of Lyme, eventually becoming "a power unto himself . . .
in control of all his master's monetary dealings", including land and coalmining, and "more respected than his
master" (ref. 23). Memorials in churches at Prestbury, Winwick, and Disley. Richard's widow Nancy was appointed as his
administratrix on 22 Aug 1791, having provided a £1,970 bond to the court on 12 Aug 1791 together with Thomas GASKELL
(a merchant, of Manchester, presumably her relative) and Thomas GATES (a yeoman, of
Norbury, Cheshire). The bond referred to Richard as a
gentleman, of How Lane in the parish of
Stockport, Cheshire. His estate was sworn to be between
£600 and £1,000, and was probably half the amount of the bond: £985. Considering the size of the estates
left by Richard's unmarried daughters, it seems likely that Richard had substantial wealth that did not pass through his
estate. [ref. 4b,6b,12,23]
Betty ORFORD, chr. 25 Jan 1769 at Disley. (According to various patron submissions to the IGI, none of which I have yet
checked, Betty ORFORD of Marple married Nathan WRIGHT on 5 Aug 1794 at either Prestbury, Cheshire, or St. Michael's,
Macclesfield, Cheshire. Note that St. Michael's, Macclesfield, was at that time a chapelry in Prestbury parish.) [ref. 6c]
Nancy ORFORD, chr. 5 Mar 1771 at Disley, d. unm. 27 Dec 1828. Made her will on 19 Sep 1827, describing herself as a
spinster, of Marple, Cheshire. The will named Nancy's sister
Ellen as executrix and as sole beneficiary after a bequest of £50 to Rev. James SUMNER, curate of Disley. The
witnesses were Thomas and Richard ORFORD, presumably Nancy's brothers. Ellen proved the will on 11 Jan 1831 and swore the
estate to be under £6,000. [ref. 4d,6c]
Ellen ORFORD, chr. 18 Jul 1773 at Disley, d. unm. 7 Jul 1834. Made her will on 16 Jul 1831, describing herself as a
spinster, of Marple, and naming her brothers Richard and Thomas as her executors of sole beneficiaries. They proved the
will on 23 Mar 1835, swearing the estate to be under £10,000. [ref. 4e,6c]

King's Norton), d. 12 Nov 1830. At
their marriage in 1799, John and Elizabeth were both of Chamber House. Not listed in Pigot and Dean's 1821-1822 New
Directory of Manchester and Salford, but at his second wife's burial in 1823, of Cavendish Place, Manchester. Baines's
1824 Directory of Lancashire lists John as a cotton spinner, residence Cavendish Place, Chorlton Row, Manchester, and
lists the firm of Orford and Kay, cotton spinners, at 6 Hodson's Court, Manchester. At his son's grant of arms in 1825, of
Manchester. John's partnership with Robert KAY (a first cousin of his first wife Elizabeth) as cotton spinners at Heywood,
was dissolved by mutual consent on 21 Oct 1828. Again not listed in the Manchester section of Pigot's 1828-29 National
Commercial Directory. In his will, John described himself as John ORFORD, esq., of
Manchester. He left the bulk of his estate in trust for his children Charles and Emily, his eldest son Richard receiving
only £100 because he was already "amply provided for". His brother Richard and son Richard were the executors and
trustees. Miss Emily Dobbs, Miss Louisa Dobbs, and Miss Ruth Dobbs (perhaps sisters of his second wife?) were to receive
£100 each and were "entrusted" with the "bringing up" of Charles and Emily. The will was proved at
Chester in Sep 1831. In 1859, the announcement in The Times for the marriage of John's daughter referred to him
(posthumously) as John Orford, esq., of Manchester. There is a memorial to John and his second family inside St.
Nicholas's, King's Norton (see sidebar). [ref. 4h,4l,6c,6r,6ac,8h,9a,24,38c,40j,40k,43d,43f,43g,45]

Mary was engaged in 1817 to Thomas BUTLER COLE, but he married another woman, and in 1818, Mary sued him for breach of
