Slater's directory for 1847 lists Braga & Co., merchants, of Brazilian buildings, Drury Lane, Liverpool. In 1851, a
merchant in the Brazil trade, living at 112 Chatham Street, Liverpool, with his wife Sarah, their children Eliza, Sarah,
José, Catherine, and Lucy, a cook, and a housemaid. Gore's
directory for 1853 lists Braga & Co., merchants, of 24 Tower buildings West, Liverpool, and lists José himself
as a merchant and Brazilian vice-consul, office as above, home 102a Chatham Street. In 1858, of Newbie Terrace, Walton
Breck, near Liverpool. Slater's directory for 1859 lists Braga & Co., merchants, of 24 Tower buildings West, and lists
José as Brazilian vice-consul, office 23 Brunswick Street, Liverpool. In 1863, a director of the newly incorporated
Anglo-Portuguese Bank, Ltd., which had temporary offices at 27 Cornhill, London E.C. In 1871, a Brazilian merchant; Sarah
was living in the household of her daughter Eliza, at 5 Wilton Polygon, Crumpsall, Manchester, Lancashire. In 1881,
José was a Brazil merchant, living at 28 Ullet Road,
Toxteth Park, Lancashire, with his wife Sarah, daughter
Lucy, Sarah's sister Eliza, a cook, and a housemaid. Is
José the same person as J.M. BRAGA, master of the brig Feliz Bahiano of 347 tons, arrived 14 Jan 1830 in

(1877-1878 and 1879), general goods merchants to Portugal and Brazil (1883 and 1886), and simply merchants (1895). The
1879, 1883, 1886, and 1895 directories note that pay day was Friday, from 11 to 1 o'clock. The 1895 directory adds a

Joze was supposedly the grandson and representative of the Marquis of Tavora (ref. 14). The 3rd marquis and his son the
4th marquis were both executed in 1759. (See Távora Affair
at Wikipedia.) Some sources assert that the 4th marquis had no children, but
some
others say that he had a daughter, Joanna de Tavora,
who was aged 12 in 1759 and was deprived of her family name in that year "by the sentence of her father, grandfather, and
