Aaargh!!
This is death by a thousand cuts. Why the hell does my landlord
want to know
so much about me! In any case, the cost of the occasional tenant eviction is
factored into the rent. My landlords are not the police- why are they behaving
like them!! Of course, the standard response is "Vote with your feet- don't
do business with such companies". Ah well, that is exactly what people
would have said when credit-card companies and health insurers started
using Social Security Numbers as their primary ID. And look where we are
now.

Lonely at the top
It must be so hard being the world's only superpower. Not just your
enemies but even your friends want to upend you
(1, 2).
I wonder if any European
country can even think of trying to be a superpower- they just won't have
enough (quantities of) people to fight all the fires raging at any given
time.

Watching the races, from the wrong side
Nascar is really fun. I really don't care about the car racing part so much
as the distinctly "Southern" mood at its races and the kind of fans it invites. They apparently sell spaces on the infield, the ground around which the race track is laid. People come in with their RVs and pitch up make-shift tents. The RV spots can be reserved as long as one renews- they are often heirloomed down to the next generation. Overheard: "God was good. We don't know what we did right" from somebody who got a really nice spot.
