Who'd have thunk!
Seriously, I still think India has more babus than necessary, whatever this
article says. I agree that we do need more people of some type- judges,
teachers and docs in rural areas etc. OTOH, the article does concede that
we have too many Class III/IV people, and that some Indian states have a
tad more departments than they really need (>70 for U.P.!!). It also
makes the observation that many Indian public sector jobs pay better than
the corresponding private sector jobs- kind of an anomaly when you think
they provide better pay *and* better security.

Earthquakes or Isabel: pick your coast...
So whats
the difference between an earthquake and a hurricane ? Buildings fall
on trees in one and trees fall on buildings in the other. Go read the whole Slashdot
thread, its classic Slashdot humor. After all, "Hurricane Sauron"
does sound terrifying ;-) I wonder if the Nazguls had individual names-
maybe we can start naming the bachcha hurricanes after them.

A Ferrari or a Mini ?
Ok, bad comparison. But seriously, even my Ford Escort (it does have a
sport-tuned suspension, mind you) can go fast enough to land me a couple
of hefty tickets. Ferraris are totally useless in a country with speed
laws. Useless for driving fast on I-405 in LA, that is. They definitely
have other advantages ;-) So the car's styling should matter more. LA
Times has two articles: one
about SoCal's car culture, with special reference to a Ferrari and another
about the growing importance of design over speed.

The Real Greenhouse Effect, as per Dubya
Every once in a while I'm struck by how masterful the Bush team is. You
have to admire
their audacity, if not their politics. This really is a stroke of
pure political genius: two birds with one stroke. Microsoft could learn a
little about FUD from these guys.
