4: Jukebox Software Module

This chapter:

Before you proceed, read Chapter 3, "Preparing Autochanger Hardware."

New Jukebox Features

This release of Solstice Solstice Backup provides new enhancements for the Jukebox Software Module, as explained in the following sections.

Cleaning Cartridge Support for Jukeboxes

Solstice Backup 4.2.6 provides automatic cleaning of devices located in supported jukeboxes.

Note - Currently, Solstice Backup automatically recognizes cleaning cartridges only in the HP SureStore 12000E.

You can enable and use this function with other autochangers, but Solstice Backup does not verify that a cleaning cartridge is in the designated slot. If a backup volume (data cartridge) is loaded in the slot designated for the cleaning cartridge, the device is not cleaned even though Solstice Backup thinks it has been cleaned.

The following man pages, which are included on the distribution media, provide additional information about cleaning cartridge support for autochangers: nsr_device, nsr_jukebox, nsrjb, and jb_config.

If your autochanger does not support the element status or bar code labeling option, you must issue the following command as root to tell the autochanger to add a cleaning cartridge to its inventory:

-------------------------------------------------------------
# nsrjb -U number_of_uses -j autochanger_name -s slot -------------------------------------------------------------

Replace number_of_uses with the number of cleanings the cartridge supports, replace autochanger_name with the name shown in the Jukeboxes window, and replace slot with the slot number where you inserted the cleaning cartridge. See the nsrjb man page for details on the available command line options.

Cleaning Cartridge Settings

Reach the cleaning cartridge settings by selecting the Devices and Media commands from the Media pull-down menu in the Solstice Backup Administrator window. Set the parameters individually for each device and autochanger.

How to Change the Assigned Cleaning Cartridge Slot

To change the assigned cleaning cartridge slot from one slot to another, follow these steps:

    1. Select the Jukeboxes command from the Media pull-down menu in the Solstice Backup Administrator window.
    2. Select Detail from the View pull-down menu in the Jukeboxes window.
    3. Enter the new slot number in the Cleaning slots field.
    4. Click Apply to save the changes.
    5. Enter the following command as root:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
# nsrjb -U number_of_uses -J jukebox_name -S new_slot_number --------------------------------------------------------------------

Replace number_of_uses with the number of cleanings the cartridge supports, replace jukebox_name with the name shown in the Jukeboxes window, and replace new_slot_number with the new slot assigned to the cleaning cartridge.

Autochanger Cartridge Access Port

Note - This section does not apply to silos, only to autochangers.

Solstice Backup 4.2.6 supports the use of the Cartridge Access Port (CAP) on autochangers with a single-slot CAP reporting as a SCSI-II Import/Export element. A CAP is the mechanism in an autochanger used to deposit and withdraw media cartridges from slots in the autochanger. A CAP enables the operator to deposit and withdraw cartridges without invalidating the device inventory list. If the operator opens the door to load or unload media, the element status of the autoloader is invalidated, requiring the long operation of reinitializing the autochanger status.

Solstice Backup uses command lines to control the operation of the CAP. See the section "Using the Jukebox Cartridge Access Port" in Chapter 8 of the Solstice Backup 4.2 Administration Guide for instructions on using the CAP with Solstice Backup. The nsrjb man pages provide detailed information about deposit and withdraw operations.

Using the CAP with Solstice Backup does not provide the following:

You must issue separate nsrjb commands to inventory volumes or specify slots.

Automatic Media Management

Solstice Backup 4.2.6 provides SmartMedia(TM), an automatic media management solution that provides

See Chapter 8, "Autochanger Software Module," in the Solstice Backup 4.2 Administration Guide for details on how to use this option with your autochanger.

Note - Automatic Media Management must be set to "no" in the Devices Configuration window before you can disable a device.

Faster Reset

Typically, you need to reset an autochanger twice in order for the autochanger to operate properly. Solstice Backup 4.2.6 improves the reset operation, reducing its execution time. If the nsrjb command indicates that volumes are still mounted in the drive, reset the autochanger again.

Autochangers Connected Through Serial Ports

Solstice Backup supports autochangers connected through SCSI and serial (RS-232) ports. Configure and connect your autochanger by following the hardware instructions shipped with your autochanger.

Jukebox Requirements

The following requirements must be fulfilled in order to run the Solstice Backup Jukebox Software Module.

Note - When running jbexercise, you must specify the control port and jukebox model type. For example, the following command runs jbexercise for the EXB-10i:

# jbexercise -c control_port -m EXB-10i

See the jbexercise man page for complete details.

How to Perform a Volume Inventory

Before using a jukebox with Solstice Backup, perform the following steps:

    1. Start without volumes mounted in the jukebox device.

If there are tapes mounted in the jukebox device, use the nsrjb -H command to unmount the media.

    2. Load the jukebox with volumes if it is not already loaded.
    3. Enter the nsrjb -I command at the system prompt to perform an inventory to determine which volumes are loaded in your jukebox.
    4. Volumes marked by a dash in the inventory list indicate volumes that have not been labeled by Solstice Backup.

If you enabled the auto media option, Solstice Backup labels these volumes as needed. If the auto media option is not enabled, use the nsrjb -L command at the system prompt or the Label speedbar button in the Solstice Backup Administrator window to label unlabeled volumes.

Refer to Chapter 8, "Jukebox Software Module," in the Solstice Backup 4.2 Administrator`s Guide for more information on labeling jukebox volumes.

Requirements for Multiple Jukeboxes Connected to the Same Server

Solstice Backup supports multiple jukeboxes connected to one backup server. You must have an enabler for each jukebox. Additionally, Solstice Backup servers prior to 4.2.6 must have had a Turbo enabler. For more information on installing multiple jukeboxes, see "Preparing to Install the Jukebox Software Module" on page 34.

Preparing to Install the Jukebox Software Module

For detailed instructions on installing your Jukebox Software Module, refer to the Solstice Backup 4.2 Installation and Maintenance Guide.

The Solstice Backup 4.2 Installation and Maintenance Guide contains separate chapters for installing Solstice Backup on the SunOS and Solaris operating systems. A section in each chapter entitled "Installing the Optional Jukebox Software Module," describes the process of installing both the server and device driver software. If you already extracted and installed the server software see the section "Running the Driver Installation Script Only" in the same chapter.
