3: Preparing Autochanger Hardware

Before you begin installing the Autochanger Software Module, you must prepare the autochanger hardware with the steps explained in this chapter.

Before Using the Autochanger

Before using the autochanger with Solstice Backup, test the autochanger hardware and perform a volume test.

How to Test the Autochanger Hardware

Follow these steps to test the physical hardware.

    1. Make sure the autochanger unit is connected via an appropriate SCSI cable.
    2. Make sure that the autochanger is plugged in and that the power is turned on.
    3. Run the lusdebug program from the command line. Verify that it runs successfully (without producing error messages).
    4. Run the jbexercise program. Verify that it runs successfully (without producing error messages). You must specify the control port and autochanger model type. For example, the following command runs jbexercise for the EXB-10i:
----------------------------------------------
# jbexercise -c control_port -m EXB-10i ----------------------------------------------

See the jbexercise man page for complete details.

How to Perform a Volume Test

Follow these steps to perform a volume test.

    1. If there are volumes mounted in the autochanger device, unmount them.
--------------
# nsrjb -H --------------
    2. Load the autochanger with volumes if it is not already loaded.
    3. Perform an inventory to determine which volumes are loaded in your autochanger.
--------------
# nsrjb -I --------------

Volumes marked by a dash in the inventory list indicate volumes that have not been labeled by Solstice Backup.

    4. Label the volumes.
--------------
# nsrjb -L --------------

If you prefer, you can click the Label speedbar button in the Administrator window to label the volumes, instead of using nsrjb -L.

Refer to Chapter 8, "Jukebox Software Module," in the Solstice Backup 4.2 Administration Guide for more information on labeling autochanger volumes. Also see Chapter 4, "Jukebox Software Module," in the Administration Update.
