"Arcane" by Assorted Artists [album]

   (Real World/Caroline, US, 1994) CD, CDRW40

[Alex Gifford, now one of The Propellerheads, is mentioned
as part of The Grid on a label on the front of this album. He
co-produced "Arcane" with Simon Jeffes (of the Penguin Cafe
Orchestra). Mr. Gifford is credited as a musician on releases by
The Grid, including the albums "456" and "Evolver". He was one
of the three fellows who rounded out The Grid on tour.]

[from Concrete Records webpages: "Founder member of The Grid, Richard Norris
has now hooked up with Californian bass player and singer Karl Leiker to
form Big Buddha. The band started last summer as Richard and Karl, but
is currently reanimating into a full throttle drum n' bass n' hammond
n' guitars band for live dates later on this summer. Their first single
'Be Here Now' was released on 9th June (1997). Make up your own mind,
but one thing is for sure, it deserves to be listened to loudly!"]

[From New Musical Express, June 1, 1996, excerpt of news item: "A
spokesman for the band said the single was recorded 'over one night in a
hazy studio in the West Country.'"]

[Review of England's Irie from New Musical Express, June 8, 1996, Singles
section, by James Oldham: "In England's corner, Bez-less Black Grape
unofficially gatecrash the whole patriotic bonanza with a number which
shoots off into a socio-political dissection of England in 1996. Except
it's funnier than that sounds. So, against a backdrop of funky-shoed
madness, someone shouts, 'I live in a land of crass hypocrisy/I'm going to
win the National Lottery.' Then a little later on, Shaun Ryder yelps,
'Squeeze me in the box', we all laugh and subsequently spend the next ten
minutes pondering why only a month after their last offering (which was
rubbish), Black Grape have decided to rediscover the plot. Nearly as
good as the Primal Scream single."]

[No confirmation of this advertised release, except as a promotional
item. Even so, it may only have been on vinyl. It was to have
included mixes by Jimmy Cauty of KLF and K Foundation fame,
Andrew Weatherall, and Nightmares On Wax. What a line up! What
a shame it's no where to be found. -MMS]

[From Melody Maker, August 10, 1996 issue, p. 53, Singles reviews by
Dave Simpson, Black Star Liner's 'Halaal Rock' E.P. designated Single
of the Week: "...Soft Cell/Grid maestro Dave Ball's epic "Caffrey
Stretch Out" extended version, featuring the most mesmeric, hallucinatory
grooves broadcastable without involving policemen, some weird cut-up
growls from Cornershop's Tjinder and the missing link between the poppy
fields of Pakistan and the Elland Road Kop." Ingo Vauk also worked on
   this remix.]

[From NME, August 10, 1996 issue, p. 31, from news section of Vibes/
Groove Check column edited by Ben Willmott: "The KLF's Jimmy Cauty,
Andrew Weatherall, and Nightmares on Wax have remixed Asian dub thumpers
Black Star Liner's latest offering, the 'Halaal Rock' E.P., out this
week." Apparently, these remixes are to be on a separate release
and are not included on the E.P. Also, 'Halaal Rock' E.P. was reviewed
in Singles section of NME, August 3, 1996, p. 49, with no mention
of Ball/Vauk remix, but a passing (joking but serious or just joking?)
mention of as yet unreleased Jimmy Cauty remix. One of the August issues
of Time Out (London) has a review of Black Star Liner's new album and
refers to the song 'Duggie Dhol' as featuring David Ball. That review
refers to two different groups called Black Star Liner.]

[* Produced by the Pet Shop Boys. Engineered by Bob Kraushaar.
Programming by Pete Gleadall. Original track produced by David
Bowie and Brian Eno, co-produced and engineered by Dave Richards.)

[** Additional Production and Remix by David Ball and Ingo Vauk]

[The remixes by David Ball and Ingo Vauk are of the Pet Shop Boys'
re-produced and re-mixed dance version of Bowie's song. Bowie re-
recorded the vocals for this version. These are not remixes of the
album version of "Hallo Spaceboy". There had been a rumor
that the U.K. label Deconstruction had picked up the remixes for
distribution, but that has not happened so far. Apparently, the
Instrumental version is a Ball and Vauk remix, but there's no
confirmation of that. Only the 7" Mix by the Pet Shop Boys has
been released commercially, on the "Hallo Spaceboy" cd single
and on the re-release of Bowie's album "Outside".]

[See Volume 2 of the Pet Shop Boys Exposed, a page for PSB collectors,
for scans of one of the U.K./European promotional vinyl releases.]

Cabaret Voltaire [mixes by Dave Ball]

[No details yet on Dave Ball's mixing work for Cabaret Voltaire.
Dave Ball did do one single as Love Street in 1988
with former Cabaret Voltaire member Stephen 'Mal' Mallinder.]

Earl Brutus [Dave Ball as producer]

This band includes Jamie Jones and others. Dave Ball has produced
tracks for an album that came out in 1998.

Elastica [Richard Norris as producer?]

Richard Norris has produced tracks for this group's next album,
   perhaps due out in 1998(?).

Elton [Dave Ball and Richard Norris on production?]

This fellow, a well-known club door host, was also a Grid
frontman, according to a 'Where Are They Now?' short profile of
The Grid in Jockey Slut magazine, August 1998 issue. However,
I can't locate Elton's name in any of the album or singles
   credits so far.

Both Dave Ball and Richard Norris worked together again with
Elton on some project, after The Grid split or went on hiatus
in 1996. But I do not have any details on that or any release
   information.

English Boy On The Loveranch

[Vocals: Jamie Jones / Instruments: Dave Ball / Drums: Nick Sanderson]

[Nick's last name is Sanderson on the CD for 'Sex Vigilante' but
I was told by someone else that it might be Saunderson.]

B1. 7:27 Sex Vigilante (Deadly Weapons Mix) [by Flood]

[Please note: Love Ranch was the name of a now defunct progressive house
club [late '80s/early '90s?] to which Red Jerry of Hooj Choons Records
refers favorably in a profile article on him in Wax magazine, Volume 1,
   Issue 10, January 1997.]

Featuring Guy Barker and The Trumpet.

Sleeve Photography by Jamie Jones. Cover star: Charlene Bronson.
Sleeve layout and design made in The Designers Republic from a
      Loveranch idea.

[The track times of the two mixes of 'Sex Vigilante' on the 12"
vinyl release roughly correspond with the times for the two mixes
on the CD release, so are those the same mixes? The CD credits
do not clear it up, except Flood is mentioned as an engineer.]

[New Rose Records address: 7, rue Pierre Sarrazin 75006 PARIS]

Brian Eno: Eno's track 'Ali Click' was remixed by The Grid (see
Remixes & Production section). Eno remixed The Grid's 'Heartbeat'
(see Singles section). The question, "Is Brian Eno sexy?", is
posed in the liner notes to "456".

Euphoria: Delerium [single remixed by Mi7 (Dave Ball and Ingo Vauk)]

Euphoria is Ken Ramm, a guitarist/musician from Toronto, who
mixes the tradition of American blues with ambient/electronic
soundscapes, in collaboration with other musicians. This single
comes from the self-titled "Euphoria" album.

Do not confuse this release with the group Delerium's single for
'Euphoria (firefly)' from 1997 that had Rabbit In The Moon remixes.
Although, that is a good single also. :)

   Written by Ken Ramm.
   Produced by Gary Hughes.
Recorded at Trevor Horn's studio in London's West End.
Published by Kramm Publishing/EMI Blackwood Music (Canada) Ltd.
Mastered by Ken Lee at Kenneth Lee Mastering, Oakland, CA

[According to the August 1995 issue of N.M.E., Richard Norris of
The Grid is the compiler of "Flux Trax", a collection of what are
called classic techno cuts that was released in August 1995 in
limited edition box sets for the 2xCD, 4xLP, and 2xCassette
formats. There are interesting liner notes for each track, but
not written by Richard Norris. The double cd limited edition
format has CD-ROM files on each of the audio CDs.]

Deborah Harry: Richard Norris (?) is credited as a performer
(keyboardist) and programmer on the "Debravation " album,
released August 10, 1993 in U.S. He may also be credited on some
of the singles released from that album, but I have not confirmed
   that.

JB Smallstars [Richard Norris as co-remixer and co-owner of label]

Love Street [Dave Ball/Stephen Mallinder/Robert Gordon/Ruth Joy]

[Find more information at: the Love Street page; a
Cabaret Voltaire discography; and The Rough Guide To Rock's page for Cabaret Voltaire.
The latter page mentions both Dave Ball and Ruth Joy as coming from
Soft Cell to become part of Love Street. I do not know what role
Ruth Joy played in Soft Cell. Stephen 'Mal' Mallinder had left
Cabaret Voltaire circa 1987 and did Love Street after that. Dave
Ball done mix work for Cabaret Voltaire, but I do not have any
   details.]

The M.E.S.H. Project (Norris/Ball)

M.E.S.H. may stand for 'Meet Every Situation Head On', the title of
the song that appears on Psychic TV's "Jack the Tab", the landmark
techno acid house album. A remix of that song appears on
Psychic TV's "High Jack / Politics of Ecstasy" E.P. M.E.S.H.
represents the first time that Richard Norris and David Ball worked
   together.

["Jack the Tab" and "Tekno Acid Beat", the ground-breaking techno/
acid house albums, were originally released separately in 1988.
They were fruits of that year's evolving dance music culture
phenomenon that lead into what has been called the third Summer of
Love experience in 1989. Genesis P. Orridge of Psychic TV fame was
the main organizer of both albums. Ball and Norris first worked
together on "Jack the Tab", on the song 'Meet Every Situation Head
On', under the name of M.E.S.H. (which may stand for the song
title). Richard Norris and David Ball did other work separate from
each other on "Jack the Tab". David Ball is credited on "Tekno
Acid Beat". As is evident below, various group names and
pseudonyms were adopted by the various musicians and artists on the
   albums.]

RCA Classical Music Project: works from RCA's back catalogue of

[This is the first ever release by the the group that came to be
known as Saint Etienne. Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs of Saint Etienne
talked about this release in Record Collector:

Bob: We went into the studio in '88. We tried to do an acid-house
record, a cash-in on the craze.

Pete: We could only afford one day's studio time. We did that with
Richard Norris [of the Grid] ...

Bob: I met him at Bam-Caruso Records. When I was on the dole, I
worked a day there, doing the mail order.

Pete: We spent most of the day wiring up a dirty phonecall line.
We sampled Bros [an English pop group] and an electro act, the
     Imperial Brothers.]

Joe Strummer (Strummerville) [Richard Norris]

[Joe Strummer started a new group called Strummerville, working with
Richard Norris. The two did a track with Black Grape called
'England's Irie', the song 'War Cry' that appears on Volume 2 of the
soundtrack to the 1997 film "Grosse Pointe Blank", and on a
few other tracks for a projected album. Then the two had a parting of
the ways, according to interviews with Strummer. So Strummerville is
kaput. See listing for "Grosse Pointe Blank" Soundtrack above.]
