Oh the twisted paths we take!
Here follows a brief summary of my great learning experiences.
Life comes full circle. I am now back working at the 'Tute,
ensconced quietly in the libraries now, as MARC Database Manager. This
is my third job in the libraries, I just kept moving up in the world!
I worked as a Law Library Assistant at BC's Law
Library. I worked with some cool people and gained excellent experience. I did a wide array of things including (but not limited to) serials check-in, supervising the microform room, coordinating the computer center and it's student workers, and (the fate of many a law library employee) loose leaf filing.
Cambridge Strategic Management
Group
I spent my first summer out of library school at CSMG re-cataloging their collection into Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings. Then I stopped back for a while during the summer of 1999 to help out.
I graduated!
I earned my Masters of Science in Library and Information Science in May 1998.
It really was a kamikasi course: I started in September and was done the
following May! I'm very glad to be done,
but I'd like to put in a word of advice for others thinking of trying it:
Don't let anyone scare you off finishing in 9 months....It's entirely
possible! And believe me they will try!
Theatre!
I spent the two years between graduation and beginning my masters working in professional theatre as a costumer.
PCPA is a professional theatre in Santa Maria, CA
which also runs training programs for young thespians. I worked as a First
Hand, which is an assistant to the cutter. It was a large costume shop; we
put on two shows at once all summer and even during the school year we were
very busy! I was able to work with several established professional designers,
and honed my construction skills, adding draping and tailoring to my
repertiore.
Some of the shows I worked on while I was there:
- Camelot
- 1776
- Forever Plaid
- Oliver
The only professional theatre in Memphis, so all the
advertising goes. I was the one and only costume intern there for a year and for quite a bit of that time I was the only employee in the shop! I worked like a dog; days off were few and very far between. But the payoff came in the fact that I was able to design 8 professional shows!
- Keely and Du
- Miss Evers' Boys
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
- Waiting for Godot
- From the Mississippi Delta
- Tapestry
- Free to Be You and Me
- Joined at the Head
I also was given the responsibility of managing the costume shop for four
months between designers and I coordinated costumes for two other shows.
Costumes weren't the only thing I got to do while I was working there!
I ran the sound board for Breaking Legs and performed in the
children's touring production of How the Animals Got Their Colors,
which gave me the opportunity to dust off my flute, too!
I have two Bachelors of Science from MIT in Chemistry and Music.
Since I left I have been discovering my nerd pride. After spending
two years around artsy people, I am relieved to return to a world where I'm
surrounded by people nerdier than I!
