House Rules and Unit Pricing Analysis
Overpriced Units (plus house rules):
I never change the price of a unit, as that would change which
armies are legal. Instead, I adjust the stats or ability wording
in the smallest way possible. I want the unit to behave just like
the designers intended, but for it to actually be worth using. I
only do this in cases where the unit would really never otherwise
be bought (not when the unit is merely low quality or
over-specialized).
- Sparticus (the rebel gladiator) -- 200 -- will also
inspire himself when he inspires other gladiators. The 'x'
marker counts as an order marker for the purposes of triggering
inspiration, meaning you can give him the 'x' and your other
gladiators the numbers.
- Sudeva (the mummy queen) -- 140 -- Stoned units "rise
again" as zombies under your control. Undead are simply killed.
She is still extremely vulnerable to return fire, and usually
does not create very many zombies before going down.
- Hatamoto Taro (the samurai flagbearer) -- 130 -- always
gets the toughness bonus (like the gorillinators).
- Alcolarh (the elven flagbearer) -- 110 -- her special leaf
power does indeed work on herself. She's still flimsy, but this
gives her a chance.
- Mimring (the fire dragon) -- 150 -- has 8 life, not 5.
This makes him well balanced and much more dragon-like.
Otherwise he's just a big expensive target.
Wishful Thinking (no house rules)
These units have abilities that should have been reworded to make
the more relevant. The units themselves are still usable, but
it's a shame that their abilities aren't better thought out. I
don't bother with house rules in these cases, since I don't like
making lots of changes.
Major X17 (the gladitron hero) -- 100 -- should be able to
grab units of any size.
Valguard (the charging barbarian) -- 100 -- should adds5
to berserk rolls, not 1. That is, the Tarn would go from a 25%
chance to a 50% chance, rather than only to a 30% chance.
Tarn (the viking berserkers) -- 50 -- should be common,
not unique. Hasboro thought that everything in the base set
should be unique, but there is no reason not to let people buy
lots of these guys.
Underpriced Units (no house rules):
None of these units are so good as to ruin the game, but I would
be willing to pay 10-20 more points for any of them. I leave these
as they are, but resist the urge to put them into every army.
