In 1841, a laborer, living at Groeswen, Brombill hamlet, Margam parish, with his wife Mary and their children John, Margret, Mary, Jane, and William. In 1851, a laborer, living at Groeswen, Taibach, Margam parish, with his wife Mary and their children John, Mary, Jennett, William, Catherin, Ann, and Joseph. In Feb 1861, a coal miner. In Apr 1861, a coal miner, living at Crosswen (= Groeswen) with his wife Mary and their children William, Ann, and Howell. In 1871, an agricultural laborer, living at Groeswen with his wife Mary, their children Catherine and William, and Catherine's son William. In 1881, a coal miner, living at 6 Groeswen Ganol (i.e. Middle Groeswen) with his son Howell and Howell's wife and son. John's descendant Gareth Morgan (in refs. 1 and 2) marked this family as "cordwrs" (cordwainers?). [ref. 1,2,3a,3b,3c,3d,3e,6]

In Feb 1861, residing at Taibach, unable to sign her name. Hopkin DAVIES and Eleanor FRANCIS witnessed the marriage in 1861. (Neither could sign.) Mary was known as Eos Kenfig, the Nightingale of Kenfig[ref. 1,2,3a,3b,6]
