Johann Anton RÄSS (John RAESS in the United States), b. 12 Dec 1888 at Appenzell (or probably Hirschberg), m. 16 Jul 1925 at St. Francis of Assissi catholic church, Spokane, Washington, Johanna Hedwig Emma FIEDLER, d. 5 Jul 1972. Entered the Swiss army at age 18, served for two years, then worked milking cows and delivering milk in Heidelberg, Germany. In 1911, a farm laborer, sailed from Hamburg on the S.S. Patricia (11 Nov) and arrived at Ellis Island, New York (1 Dec). He paid for his own passage and arrived with $175 in his pocket. Albert SPECK of Appenzell, age 26, relationship unknown, apparently traveled with him. Johann's destination on arrival in New York is illegible on the passenger manifest. He traveled by train to Wisconsin, then lived in Monroe and Tacoma, Washington. In 1914, bought a farm in Colbert, Washington. In 1920, a farmer, living by himself in Green Bluff township, Spokane County, Washington; he owned his house and had his first papers for citizenship but was not yet naturalized. In 1930, a dairy farmer, living in Green Bluff township with his wife Hanna and daughter Elizabeth; he was a naturalized citizen, owned his house, and had a radio. [ref. 1,2,6,7n,7o,8]
