Summae |
---|
You can only study a summa as long as your score in the Art is lower than the level of the text. The student generates a Study Total equal to his Intelligence + Concentration + summa's Quality and gains this number of XP in the Art.
For Knowledges (e.g., Magic Theory), the student gains the Study Total divided by 5, rounded up, in experience points.
In no case can you raise an Art or Knowledge by more than 3 levels.
This poorly bound and disorganized text is a bizarre mixture of insight and distractions. The author seems to have both a deep understanding of his subject and very little desire to communicate it with anyone but himself. (Quality is rolled each season.)

This is a basic text of the Order of Hermes, familiar to nearly every apprentice. It contains lessons in the four basic elemental arts; however, the level of the text is generally low, and so it is not suited to more than apprentices or the youngest of magi.

A clear and precise text on the arts of Rego and Vim, with an emphasis on wards and blocking demons. The last chapter seems to be an argument that Rego-Vim can be used to keep the mind of a magus away from sin, but the theory is thin.

A seminal work in the art of Imagonem by the last filia of Criamon, the great mystic and founder. It is quite compelling to read, and if a magus or maga can still benefit from the book after reading it for a season, he or she will feel a strong urge to continue with it the next season.

Written by Xenaxos.
Description: Three doxen or so sheets of vellum tied in old silken cord. They appear to be pages from badly damaged volume. The text is partially in Latin and partially in Greek. The Latin part seems hermetic and refers to Intellego, Mentem, and Animal. The text is now restored, and contains the notes of Arachne III f. Arachne II of House Criamon.
There is a description of a bonding ritual and of a mage ending up with a rat's paw in place of his left hand. There is a magical place with stones bearing inscriptions and some notes on the original author's attempt to translate. There is a theoretical digression into the implications of tying ones gift more strongly into the familiar bond.
The following bond quality exists in the book:
Exchanged Shadows +5; You will and your familiar will cast each other's shadow. This may allow each of you deduce things about the other's actions and whereabouts. Furthermore, you will be in range of each other if and only if you are both in light that produces a clear shadow (regardless of distance) and you may catch occasional glimpses of what the other is seeing. You may take no other bond qualities that relate to bond range.
Note: Arachne describes that the light need not be from the same source, and that in clear daylight, this bond essentially will be unlimited.

This book is a morbid read, concerning mainly the state of the human body at and after the departure of the human soul. The book commences with an in-depth studying of the functioning of a healthy human body, followed by the path of a horrible consumption. The author follows the death of the body, with a particular focus on and fascination of the moment that the soul departs the body. The book ends with a discussion of the inert human body, and includes an odd non-magical ritual for the presevation and preparation of the body for the after-life.Talk to Alexei if you read this book.

A Liber Quaestionum may only be studied once. The student generates a Study Total equal to Intelligence + Concentration + Quality - (5 * (abs(student's current score - libri's target level))); the student then gets XP equal to the Study Total, but cannot raise an Art by more than 3 levels.
An incisive reiteration of what was apparently a long argument between Rudolphis and his parens. Rudolphis seems to ridicule both his master and his younger self. The author's understanding clearly exceeds what is revealed here. Perhaps he felt compelled to write this text in order to move on.

A quantitative description of chicken, this work is clearly part of a larger body of works on Animal, with an especial focus on familiars.

This is a terse work on Animal focusing on barnicles. The author clearly has a keen interest in ships, and except for the text's lack of organization, could almost be a primer on ship-building.

This focuses on mundane techniques of persuasion and how these principles can be applied to better understand the mutability of human emotion. The book is meticulously edited and therefore quite clear. However it veers wildly off topic towards the end and initiates a rather denser discussion of the triadic relationship between love, hate and apathy, but never gets beyond a definition of terms. Thus the end reads much like the misplaced introduction to another book.

This is a slightly disjointed book that drifts from topic to topic and switches in tone while providing an adequate understanding of its material. It is an elementary text providing a simple grounding in Corpus, with special detail to how the body grows and changes.

This librus is dedicated to Laus' quest to find an animal in the frozen north. Although it is well-written and relatively lucid, the taint of House Criamon makes this book a difficult read. In addition, many passing references are made to Criamon works that are not well known outside of the house. There is also a strange epilogue about evil and indigestion.

In the Appendix to The Game, Lazarus responds to a number of criticisms made by other magi on Lazarus' understanding of Vim. The style of argument greatly augments Lazarus' already solid writing style. In his closing argument, Lazarus writes, "Perhaps my greatest enjoyment in responding to criticism is th eknowledge that none of my would-be critics understood the underlying truth of my text. Should any magus ever take the true grain of wisdom from this text. I will bow in respect to that individual."

Tracti |
---|
A tractatus may only be studied once. To study a tractatus, you must know the spell. (You cannot learn a spell from a tractatus.) The student generates a Study Total equal to Intelligence + Concentration + Quality; the student then gets that many XP in an Art, but cannot raise that Art by more than 3 levels. A tractatus is only about a single Art (the one that the magus was stronger in at the time of writing). Tracti have a quality equal to the magnitude of the spell.
One of the most copied works in the Order. It is considered the prototype of the Tractatus. The work is spare and elegant; the master's simplicity of expression lovingly copied through the centuries.

Deflects a single blow of any animal or weapon made from an animal
product up to the size of a two-handed bone club. You can deflect
a different attack each round. The attack automatically misses,
but the attacker still rolls to see if he botches (with two extra
botch rolls for melee weapons). If you ordinarily carry a bone
weapon, it must be tossed aside for the casting.
