Long-term Rental Committee Report

Minutes from Nov. 10th meeting

Members: David Kahn and ALisa Starkweather (also present Diane Johnson)

In our first meeting our agenda covered the following:

  1. Defining our function and goals
  2. Defining "Long-term" and criteria of camp
  3. a. discussion of collaboration with the Site Search '97 committee
    b. Defining a criteria of questions to be asked to the camps contacted for '97 in regards to "long- term" rental interest.
  4. Misc. Concerns

I. Defining our function and goals:

Our primary function is to determine what is available to DNE in terms of long-term rental options. For instance, from our investigating camps, we will know the level of interest and what is available. With accurate information the CSC will be able to make better decisions concerning our next steps. If we found something ideal, we could wait while smoothing out the rough edges around buying, membership, etc. So, our primary goal is to be a probe. Also, to set criteria of what is meant by long-term renting.

II. Defining "Long-term" and criteria of camp

By long-term we mean anything over one year (2-15 years). Because of DNE's interest in the buying market and all of the time it may take before we are actually ready as a community to take this action, having a two-year or more rental option may be ideal. If we find such a situation we will need to discuss with a larger group what this ultimately means. For now, we mean at least two years. Our criteria of this camp is as follows.
  1. Our first priority is that it is a fully functioning camp but not limited to (in case we find a "dead camp" that will rent).
  2. This camp is interested in renting to us for least two years, but not limited to.
  3. If it is the ideal camp, we rent with an option to buy if this presents itself as an option.

III a. Discussion of collaboration with the Site Search '97 committee

In effort not to double our efforts, it was agreed to contact the Site Search '97 members as quickly as possible. Since these members are already needing to call every camp in the NorthEast, it made sense to distribute an extra four questions to ask in their ongoing search process which would aid our goal for gathering information.

III b. defining a criteria of questions to be asked to the camps contacted for '97 in regards to "long-term" rental interest.

The following is the letter which went out describing three steps and the four questions.

IV. Misc. Concerns ( some unanswered)

  1. What happens with the question of DNE's growth factor, if a camp wants to enter a long-term rental lease and is limited in the amount of people it can contain?
  2. Are there any other camps including camps which need work that we are not aware of?
  3. What criteria from the land-use committee do we need to be aware of?
  4. Review the criteria which Site Search '97 has from Bill McCarthy around DNE's needs.
  5. David Kahn KahnD@VOLPE62.DOT.GOVis the contact person and ALisa and David will consult when information begins to come in from the SS'97. Diane Johnson DJOHNSON@EMERALD.TUFTS.EDU has access to Fax machine and is available to send out information to those who don 't have e-mail. ALisa now has e-mail. Alisastar@aol.com
