The 1891 census was the first to ask about Welsh language. Most people on this page who were in the 1891 census said they spoke Welsh, and most in the 1901 census said they spoke both Welsh and English.
Richard JONES, d. by 1861. At his son's marriage in 1861 (posth.), a coal miner. Richard's great great grandson Gareth Morgan (in ca. 1962 and in 1975) did not know Richard's name but marked "chandlers" by his unnamed parents and suggested six siblings, including a brother Phillip. Gareth Morgan also marked this family (ca. 1962) as dynon y marg, perhaps meaning dynion y Margam ("people of Margam"). The only source I have yet found for Richard's name is the posthumous mention on his son Joseph's marriage certficate. If that was an error by the registrar (note that Joseph was illiterate) it may be that Richard is in fact Joseph JONES[ref. 1a,1c,3b]

In 1881, a coal miner, living at 13 Bridge Row, Taibach, with his wife Mary and their children Joseph, Thomas, Mary, Margaret, Lewis, Evan, John, Daniel, Ann, and Ellen. (The family of Evan JONES was next door at 14 Bridge Row in 1881.) At his death in 1890, of Bridge Row. In 1891, Mary was living at 79 High Street, Taibach, with her children Lewis, John, Ellen, and Daniel. In 1901, she was living at 79 High Street with her children Thomas, Evan, and Ellen. (Her daughter Mary was living next door at 80 High Street in 1901.) In 1911, she was living with her daughter Ellen.
