Descendants of Edward David

A note on DAVID versus DAVIES:  Gareth Morgan (in ref. 1) and Dilys (Jones) Edwards (pers. comm.), two grandchildren of Elizabeth (David) Jones, are both clear that the form DAVID is correct. However, some entries in the 1871 and 1881 censuses use the form DAVIES, as do some of the baptisms indexed in refs. 7a and 7b. Apparently the two forms were used interchangeably in the 19th century but had settled down to a consistent DAVID by the 20th. Since official records were kept in English, while the family spoke Welsh and may not have been literate even in that language, perhaps the confusion should not be surprising.
