My Teaching Philosophy and Experience

My teaching experience covers a variety of formats ranging from informal one-on-one instruction in the lab or during project development to lectures and student-activity-based classes. I have taught on a breadth of topics related to Computer Programming, Analog and Digital Circuit, 3-D Designing and Modeling(see course listing below). There is a compelling reason why I set up open courses for the undergraduates from my school. I believe the interdisciplinary nature of engineering often requires a broad understanding of basic ideas of electrical engineering, computer sciences, material engineering, etc. And I notice in the School of Naval Architect, Ocean and Civil Engineering, undergraduate students as well as my school mates, ranging from freshman to senior have no credit requirements to take any related courses. As a result, most undergraduates have no such background and therefore do not know the basic ideas and fundamental principles, which I think, are essential to an engineering student.

Under the encouragement of several professors as well as many friends, I initiated developing these introductory-level open courses providing class takers an opportunity to approach these useful topics and I can, therefore, take advantage of these chances to introduce and also discuss with the students, especially freshmen and sophomores, to and about the exciting researches emerging from related engineering disciplines, which I hope that may eventually lead to some great inspirations.

My very first two courses, Introduction to Programming and Introduction to Embedded Development opened in March, the 14th, 2011. In these two courses, I put much emphasis on a belief that students should make efforts to embrace various ideas and try their best to integrate all the subjects they have taken, in which they may find some intriguing and challenging topics to explore. Lately, my emphasis on integrating theory and concepts with hands-on experiences in addition to group work continues into other two newly-developed open curricular courses entitled 3D-Designing and Animation and Useful Math and Engineering Tools You Should Know, currently taught by me and also other lecturers(Dr. Liu Jingyang, Ph.D candiadate Qian Peng and Mr. Xiao Fei)
