It is nice that one of the latter topics of this course will be
culture jamming - the subversion of the commercial media that surround
us. Although there are many culture jammers out there, nobody does it
better than Ad Busters. Their magazine has lambasted corporate culture
and hacked ad campaigns for years. Now it looks like they are
expanding their focus to include the Internet, examining such new
trends such as those ubiquitous banner advertisements found on almost
any popular web page these days
    (http://www.adbusters.org/adbusters/sucker!.html) As a bonus, they've
posted much of their back catalogue on the web page as well. Check it
out. You may not like it (they get a bit too self-righteous for my
tastes sometimes), but it'll make you think seriously about the
insiduous presence of advertising in modern media.
