Languages
and
Linguistics
I've been interested in languages for as long as I can remember. Through
my interest in languages, I discovered linguistics. Since middle school,
I've stolen as much time away from my schoolwork as I can to read about
linguistics, and when, a few years ago, I discovered the world wide web,
linguistics was the first thing I looked up.
While there is a lot of information on individual languages available
on the web, and some information from various universities on areas of
linguistic, I have not found any comprehensive treatment of languages
and linguistics on the web that was both thorough and
non-technical. That is my goal here
Not all of these are finished yet, but this at least represents
what I eventually plan to have on this page.
This background is a picture of the Rosetta Stone. The Rosetta
Stone, written over 2,000 years ago, was the key to deciphering
Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. The stone was inscribed with the same
message (about one of the Ptolmy's) in Hieroglyphics, Demotic (a
simplified form of hieroglyphics), and Ancient Greek. The Greek was
what allowed for the translation. The stone was found by Napoleon's
army in the town of Rosetta, Egypt.
