10.213 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics

This class opens with a brief introduction to statistical thermodynamics and then explores chemical thermodynamics and engineering thermodynamics. It is typically taken by ChemE undergraduates in their sophomore year. Some core emphases that underlie our approach are: 1. building molecular intuition for physical processes; 2. obtaining and interpreting thermodynamic data; 3. using thermodynamic calculations to derive practical insights with broad societal relevance.

This class offers an advanced and unified treatment of heat, mass, and momentum transfer. It is typically taken by first-year graduate students or advanced undergraduates in ChemE. Its titular focus on "analysis" means that the first one-third of the semester is mainly dedicated to teaching advanced mathematical methods like similarity solutions, perturbation methods, and eigenfunction expansions. Despite its reputation for heavy math and long calculations, true mastery lies in the simple arguments and physical insights that remain after the dust settles.

This class is the first formal introduction to our discipline for ChemE undergraduates, who typically take it at the beginning of their sophomore year. Beyond building a solid foundation for future coursework, this class provides a first exposure to complex, open-ended engineering problems and the mindset and methodology required to tackle them.

MIT Video Game Orchestra
The MIT Video Game Orchestra (VGO) is a student-led group that performs member-made orchestral and chamber arrangements of video game music as well as other types of music not commonly heard in the concert-hall setting. I am a proud founding member (2016), former president and musical director (2018–2019), and currently a member and Faculty Advisor to the VGO executive board.
