Big Top Carnival

Popcorn

by Todd Etter, Evan Davis
Answer: CRIMSON TIP

This puzzle is based on the idea (which was new to us!) that popcorn comes in two forms, butterflies (typical light and airy movie popcorn) or mushrooms (more roundish popcorn normally given in gourmet tins).

Each image in the grid is either a type of mushroom or butterfly with each one fitting into the blanks provided (alphabetically).

Once you’ve identified all of the images, you can logically fit the puzzle pieces onto the grid so that butterfly popcorn only appears on butterfly images and the same for mushrooms.

After identifying everything, you should hopefully notice that the red squares on the puzzle pieces correspond to butterflies or mushrooms that are associated with a single color. These colors match the colors of the butterfly and mushroom popcorn depicted in the puzzle. If you index into the butterfly or mushroom (bolded in the image above), you’ll get the answer of CRIMSON TIP, which is a variety of butterfly.
