Edible Link (1994)

A Virtual Sculpture by Georg Gerber

"Infinite space is simply a scandal to human thought." -- Bishop Barnes.

This virtual sculpture is a link known as the Borromean rings, supposedly after an Italian Renaisance family called the Borromeas who used it on their family crest. It has the property that if any ring is cut, the link is broken.

I made this virtual sculpture by programming an IPAS routine for 3-D Studio that takes a parametric equation and builds a tube around it with continuous mapping coordinates. I created three identical rings in this way and then offset them. I then created a texture for the link in PhotoStyler, applied it, and rendered several views of it.
