About Me
My name is Gatlen Culp, I'm a junior at MIT with a background in software engineering and entrepreneurship/organization. I'm currently interested in AI safety from a technical, policy, and cybersecurity perspective.
About Me
AI is going to irrecoverably and dramatically change humanity in the next few decades. My long-term interest is in influencing emerging general AI technology to be safe and beneficial for everyone. My short-term goals involve building up soft skills like project and team management, building my world view, and skilling up in technical fields like machine learning, cybersecurity, math, economics, and decision making.
My programming experience includes Python (Advanced), JavaScript, HTML/React, CSS/SASS (Intermediate), and C#, C++, Bash, Git, MongoDB (Basic). I've worked on a broad range of programming projects including websites, camera vision, Unity-based games, and competitive programming.
I've led various entrepreneurial and organizational projects, including founding a small-scale business, leading a high school robotics team, and directing the operations and compute of MIT AI Alignment (MAIA).

Work Experience
Evaluations/SWE Contractor
METR
ContractRemote
Enhanced Vivaria, METR's platform for AI agent evaluation research. Developed CLI tooling including project templates, installation scripts, a Homebrew installer, and improved documentation to streamline developer workflow. Designed Python-based unified installation system replacing legacy shell scripts, improving reliability and maintainability while adhering to project standards. Created comprehensive testing suites and technical documentation. METR is a non-profit working with the UK and US governments and AI labs to empirically assess the risks and capabilities of transformative AI.
DevOps & Full Stack Engineer
MIT Computational Biology Lab, MantisAI Team
ResearchCambridge, MA
MantisAI is a Django-based data visualization platform leveraging LLMs to transform textual and traditional data into interactive maps. Architected CI/CD pipelines using GitHub actions, PyTests, Docker, Bash Scripts, Quality Control Tools, secrets management, and Dev and Production branch controls with direct deployment to AWS. Led project-wide Code, Project, and Documentation (Notion, Technical, and Onboarding) Refactors and a PostgreSQL database migration. Contributed ideas during team meetings and created demo videos. Used NetworkX to add a customizable graph-based interface for users to view new connections in their data. Led the initiative to squash security vulnerabilities in our workflow.
Machine Learning Researcher
Stanford Existential Risks Initiative & MIT Algorithmic Alignment Group
ResearchCambridge, MA
Designed and implemented a technique for language models to identify diverse prompts that result in bad responses (text that contains violence, explicit imagery, false information, etc.) Contributing ideas in team discussion, training and selecting models for our technique's pipeline, and communicating our findings through diagramming software and academic writing. This project is an extension of the Red Teaming Language Models with Language Models paper.
Director of Operations & Compute
MIT AI Alignment (MAIA)
Part-timeCambridge, MA
Managed office environment, logistics, and 20 workstations for ~200 members. Developed MopMan (My Operations Management) software using AirTable and custom automations, reducing operational workload by 10 hours weekly while improving program quality. Led office relocation project, identifying a facility that halved expenses while maintaining quality. Designed a collaborative workspace that enhanced member interaction and productivity. Oversaw AWS resources for MAIA and HAIST, supporting advanced research including fine-tuning and training large language models.
Full Stack Web Developer
MIT's Civic Data Design Lab (CDDL)
Full-timeCambridge, MA
Implemented contribution form web page for workshop submissions using React.js, SASS, and MongoDB. Created WhatsApp messaging interface providing workshop information via text using Twilio and Next.js webhooks. Developed script to compress MongoDB image sizes, greatly improving load times. Helped bring the Living Heritage Atlas | Beirut project to completion on extremely short notice.
