  • que replaces a direct object.

  • qui replaces the subject.

  • replaces a place or time.

  • dont replaces an object of the preposition de.

Omit the de when using dont.

  • lequel replaces the object of a preposition (other than de).

In this case, keep the pronoun. Lequel changes to match the gender and number of the object (lesquels, laquelle, lesquelles). It also contracts to auquel (etc) and duquel (etc) for à and de.

If the pronoun refers to something unspecified, use ce que, qui, dont.
