Statement on arrest of vandalism suspect

An update on an incident of vandalism on MIT’s campus on July 6: A suspect has been arrested. The arrest occurred on August 7, following vandalism at the Massachusetts State House on July 23. The suspect is not affiliated with MIT.

In the MIT incident, the Stata Center was vandalized with spray-painted messages threatening Israelis who serve or have served in the military. The vandalism on MIT’s campus was one of several such incidents that weekend across the Boston area.

Following the Stata incident, MIT acted quickly to increase patrols at Stata and elsewhere across campus, and to investigate the incident. MIT also immediately notified and partnered with outside law enforcement, including the FBI.

As President Sally Kornbluth noted in a July 8 message to the MIT community, MIT will press for criminal charges for those responsible for the Stata vandalism. She wrote: “We must not, and we will not, tolerate threats of violence and targeted vandalism on our campus.”
