Why The Gods Did Not See
In the beginning the gods sat with their eyes closed
on the horizon, imagining the world.
One felt a spider build a web against her cheek and said,
Here the wind is made of silk. It leaves pieces of itself against the
face.
Another felt a snake crawl over his outstretched palm,
The air is cold and heavy. It draws across your skin like a dull knife.
A third felt sand run between his fingers,
The earth is made of pebbles the size of insects' eyes.
When we walk on it, we will bury ourselves.
A fourth felt the sun at midday,
Here time is hot and the minutes are like drops of oil on my brow.
Perhaps we should open our eyes, said a fifth.
If we are dreaming, whispered the sixth,
then won't it be just as we have dreamed it?
Unless, said the seventh god,we are dreaming we are dreaming. .
