Last season was a year in which the team accomplished many of its goals. What the team lacked in numbers (with only 10 gymnasts on the roster), it made up in character. The team was not as deep as the year before, but received some strong contributions from its first year students to try to make up for the lack of depth. In the end, the team broke the school team record for Beam and Floor as well as some top individual performances.
The group of freshman were key performers all year. Replacing last year's graduating senior Alli Christenson fell on the shoulders of freshman Amy Shui. Amy was about as consistent as they come all year and was a major part of the team's overall success. The team also received memorable performances from Cecile LeCocq who wowed the judges and audiences with her dance on floor. The freshman class was rounded out by Betsy Krichten who became an important vaulter throughout the season and worked hard to put a floor routine together that she performed in the last meet of the season.
The sophomores were led by school record holder Sonja Ellefson. Sonja probably had the best year of her gymnastics career as she gathered every individual school record on her way to placing 4th in the All-Around at NCGA Nationals. She also became MIT's first ever ECAC All-Around Champion breaking the 38 mark. Sonja also won vault at that meet and gathered all-america honors on vault and bars at nationals. Liz Ellingson continued her consistent performances from her freshman season and even improved on her personal best score on every event highlighted by a 9.35 on beam and a 9.575 on floor exercise. A pleasant surprise addition to the team was newcomer Karla Maguire who really contributed on bars where the team needed her the most.
Our leaders were our juniors Stephanie Cheng, Robin Chiu, and our seniors Rachel Van Buren and Marnie Bell. All four had tremendous impact on the entire season. Rachel set a personal best score on every event and reached a 35 in the all-around for the first time ever. She also qualified to NCGA Nationals as an individual on the floor exercise. Marnie regained her consistency on beam posting a personal best 8.7 Stephanie posted personal best scores on bars and contributed to the team record total on floor, while Robin contributed to the team total on beam.
All in all it was another fun and exciting season as MIT posted more team wins then ever before and added a couple of individual awards to the list.
