ECAC Athletes of the Week

Cindy Chung becomes the second MIT gymnast recognized as ECAC Athlete of the Week.  For the week ending on February 8th, Cindy shares the award with SUNY-Brockport standout - Carrie Santore.  Cindy's performance at Springfield in winning the balance beam with a 9.45 and also scoring a season high on vault 9.275 and floor 9.325 earned her the recognition.

Merritt Tam became the first Division III gymnast recognized this year by the ECAC for her record-breaking performance at Brown on January 18th.  Merritt broke the Institute's bar record with a 9.75 and also posted a career best 37.975 in the all-around.

Jennifer Miller-McEachern and Eduardo Ovalle host SC Homeshow

Once upon a time Jen and Eduardo were teammates at Springfield College where the tradition of gymnastics was established in 1891.  Gymnastics shows at Springfield were a staple in the late 1920s and 1930s.  Through the 1950s to the 1970s, Springfield had a traveling show and a competitive team.  Most recently, the Gymnastics Show has become an annual event during Homecoming and therefore renamed the Springfield College Homeshow.  In its 96th edition, Jen and Eduardo had the great honor of being asked to emcee the show on October 24th and 25th, 2003.

MIT's class of 2007

Two members of the class of 2007 have joined the team this fall. Ashley Tran is a level 9 competitor from Beaverton, OR who competed for The Gym Nest.  Lara Hershcovitch is also a level 9 competitor from Mt. Sinai, NY.  Both are a very welcome addition to a team that only returns 7 letterwinners.

We are proud to announce the addition of the newest member of the MIT gymnastics family - a son, George Sawyer Garrett, born to Sean Garrett and Catherine Rocchio on October 30th, 2003.

The 2002-2003 Season Wrap-Up

The 2003 season was one of great accomplishments by the Engineers.  They finished the season with their best win-loss record ever at 7-7 (not including 2 wins against a collegiate club team) including a 5-3 record vs. Division III (NCGA) opponents.  MIT broke the 180 point mark for the first time in its history and re-established the school record four different times throughout the year.  The new record stands at 182.025.  The school record for team bars was also broken four times in 2003 with a new mark of 45.85 established at the conference/regional championships.  Leading the charge on the new and improved bars line-up were sophomore Merritt Tam and first-year student Francesca DeMeo who finished 2nd and 4th respectively at the conference/regional championships.  Merritt went on to finish 6th at the Nationals to claim all-america honors on that event.  Cindy Chung '04, Jennifer Sauchuk '06 and Chandler Hatton '06 were all major contributors to a floor line-up that set a new school mark of 47.525 and was ranked number one in the nation for three straight weeks in the middle of the season.  Cindy went on to finish in 13th place at the NCGA National Championships.  Along with Merritt and Cindy, Francesca and Ashley Rothenberg '05 also qualified as individuals to the national tournament.  Francesca and Ashley competed on bars.

One of the greatest feel good stories of the year was the return to the bar line-up of senior captain Caitlin Dwyer-McNally. Caitlin suffered what seemed to be a career ending injury at the end of the 2002 season, but she worked extremely hard to finish her career on her own terms and she was an inspiration to the entire team.

Overall just another stepping stone on a program that continues to grow and improve.  MIT will be hosting the 20th Anniversary NCGA Championships in 2004 and we hope to have an even better year then.
