Rowingin Hawaii
Next Regatta: December 29, 1998 to January 3, 1999
While rowing in Hawaii is currently limited to a few people with single or double sculls, the Royal Hawaiian Rowing Challenge has brought sweep rowing back to the islands. Competitive races with large boats--such as the eight man shells which race at the olympics--were popular here until about the 1960's. The Ala Wai Canal was home to several high school rowing programs, and many people can remember back to those exciting races between the six-man rowing shells used at the time. Now, thanks to the efforts of the Royal Hawaiian Rowing Challenge, its sponsors, and participants, this graceful sport returns to islands every January.
