Salvo is a deaf, part Mainecoon, fluffy, white cat whom I adopted in early 2005. He was born in summer 1998, the product of two strays. Once the runt of the litter, he is now nearly 20 pounds and king of all he can survey. Despite being deaf, he can really project his yowls when he's hungry or feeling neglected. He is a master at opening doors and kitchen cabinets, and cannot abide the thought of a door he hasn't gone through. He is utterly convinced that he can hide by putting his head inside of small enclosures, even when his huge white butt is still sticking out. Some chemical in the covers of the Economist causes him to attack them ruthlessly, although he takes little interest in other publications. I have received more spontaneous emails about my cat photos than I have about my research.

A college friend of mine has a very cute kitten named Aoife.
There are some good photos of another fluffy white cat (Athena) on Caprice's Blog. Athena looks just like Salvo, but smaller and thinner.
