Some elements of Romanticism aren't that new in Japan....
Human relationships, fantastic stories, and sentimentality have been
commonplace:
- Genji Monogatari/Tale of Genji (Lady Murasaki)
- Chinese legend imports, such as Suikoden ("The Water Margin")
- Japanese folklore: full of weird monsters and ghosts
- WWII era Japan: sentimental music
- Akira Kurosawa films: "The Hidden Fortress" helped inspire "Star Wars"
