Rodrigo Canales is a PhD candidate in the Strategy and International Management Group at MIT Sloan’s Behavioral and Policy Sciences Department.

Rodrigo’s research is centered on institutions and economic development, with a specific focus on institutions that affect the quality and levels of entrepreneurship in developing countries. Most of his research seeks to understand the process through which institutions are purposefully changed, with a focus on the role of individuals in that process. So far, he has done work in the Mexican financial sector, including work in Small Business credit and Microfinance. Related to this, he is also doing work on how the organization of the financial sector impacts small firms in different institutional environments.

Rodrigo received an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management and has a BS in Industrial Engineering from Mexico’s Universidad Iberoamericana (Summa Cum Laude).  He is a recipient of the 2004 GBI-Stern Aspen Foundation grant for his microfinance research.

Prior to starting his Ph.D., Rodrigo worked for Booz Allen & Hamilton, where he worked both on the Telecom sector and in Government. He participated in two entrepreneurial start-ups, and also did work in Venture Capital. Additionally, he has advised startup ventures on their financing strategies, as well as local governments and private firms interested in small business finance.
