The Fallen

ANSWER: CROSS COUNTRY

Each epitaph clues a long-dead king who was known by a derogatory epithet. The names of the kings can be entered into the horizontal spaces of the crosses, and their epithets in the vertical spaces, mostly in the order of the puzzle, except for Ferdinand the Inconstant, who is so inconstant that he is entered out of order, in the 8th cross though he is clued by the last verse.

The letters that fall on the numbered squares in each cross can be arranged in numerical order to spell the name of a country (not the one that king ruled), except that in each case one letter is missing. The missing letters, in order, spell the answer, CROSS COUNTRY.
