The answer is JABBERWOCK The corresponding square is house puzzle by Albert Lin This is an on-campus runaround. PART I: Finding The Locations These rubbings were made from plaques and engravings around campus. Locating a few reveals that most of them have been altered from the original inscription. Here is a table of locations and inscriptions: Image Location Original Text Letters changed 01 outside W91 RATED LOAD 500 LBS TE 02 outside 1-370 (?) PART II: Processing The Data Once all the locations are found, there are two patterns to notice about this collection of rubbings. First, exactly half of the locations are outdoors (1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 16, 19, 20, 21, 24) and half are indoors (2, 4, 7, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 22, 23). Next, the directions of the grain of the rubbings is evenly distributed: 4 images are rubbed vertically, 4 horizontally, 4 at 30 degrees, etc. Furthermore, for each direction, 2 are indoors and 2 are outdoors. The two clock faces indicate where to place the changed letters. The central 'I' and 'O' stand for indoor and outdoor, respectively. When changed letters are arranged around the outside of the circle according to rubbing direction (so that the rubbing direction is parallel to a line drawn from the center of the circle to the letter's point on the circumference), with the 'I' or 'II' indicating the number of letters to place, a messge is spelled. Of course, for any pair of images with the same grain direction, their letters could be arranged in either of two ways around the circle, but the 'I' and 'II' constrain their placement, and there are only 64 possible configurations of all the changed letters around the circle--only one of those produces an intelligible phrase. For the indoor images this is: CL CH A AT . | . W . . C - + - S . . . . | T TH A Reading clockwise from 12 o'clock, the message is "CLAWS THAT CATCH". Applying the same procedure for the outdoor images reveals the phrase: "JAWS THAT BITE". The phrase "jaws that bite / claws that catch" refers to the JABBERWOCK.
