1.8: Rack Your Brain

Back to hunt | Back to puzzle set
Dorothy approached the young man, who seemed to be studying something on the table in front of him, deep in thought. He was an unusual-looking fellow, with keen eyes and a large bushy beard of fire-red hair; and, despite the blizzard outside, he was wearing shorts. As Dorothy got closer, she could see that the focus of his interest was a Scrabble board he had spread out in front of him.

"Are you playing Scrabble?" asked Dorothy.

"Yes," said the man.

"Who are you playing against?"

"Myself."

"You're practising?"

"Yes."

Dorothy studied the perplexing board, full of unfamiliar words. "What does VUG mean?"

"A cavity in a rock."

"Do you know the definitions of all the words you play?"

"No."

"Wouldn't it be more fun if you only played words that you know the meaning of?"

"Why?"

"Well, because... because...." But Dorothy realised she couldn't find the words to justify her instinct. "Anyway, you seem to be awfully good at this. Would you mind teaching me a little?"

"Alright."

So Dorothy sat down across from the man, and they began to play. "My name is Dorothy, by the way. What's yours?"
