Admission Procedure
DEADLINE
Applications are accepted for fall term admission and are due December 15th. The ORC does not offer admission for the Spring term.
APPLICATION WEBSITE
The application website for applying to the ORC is https://gradapply.mit.edu/orc
The application fee is $75. The OR Center does not grant fee waivers. The fee is a mandatory requirement set by the Institute. MIT accepts personal checks, money orders and Mastercard and Visa for payment of the application fee.
Applications must include the following:
- three letters of recommendation
- complete academic transcripts
- completed Record of Courses Taken Section; and
- the student's statement of objectives.
Transcripts
As part of the online application process, students will be asked to upload an unofficial copy of their transcripts. In addition, students must provide a hard copy of their official transcripts. The transcripts should be sent directly to:

GRE/TOEFL Requirements
GRE Examination
All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Aptitude test. The Institute Code for submitting GRE score reports is 3514.
NOTE: The ORC does not accept the GMAT. The Advanced Subject GRE is not required for admission.
English Proficiency Tests
Beginning with applications for Fall 2012 admission, the ORC strongly encourages international applicants from non-English speaking countries to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) instead of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). The IELTS exam measures one's ability to communicate in English in four major skill areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. IELTS test results are strongly preferred, though TOEFL test scores will also be accepted. For more information about the IELTS, and to find out where and how to take the exam, please visit the IELTS web site. All test scores must be from within the past two years.
IELTS
Minimum score required: 7.
Students must request that the official test scores be sent directly from the test center where you take the exam. There are no institutional codes for IELTS. You should request the test scores be sent to the ORC Graduate Admissions Coordinator.
TOEFL
Minimum score required:
- 600 = paper based test,
- 250 = computer based, and
- 100 = internet based test.
A TOEFL waiver may be considered under certain circumstances. Students must contact the Graduate Admissions Coordinator. The Department Code for submitting the TOEFL score report is 67. The Institute Code for submitting GRE score reports is 3514
Registration information for TOEFL may be obtained at www.toefl.org.
The OR Center will not consider applications to the OR programs if the TOEFL and/or IELTS score is lower than the minimum score requirement.
The MIT Course Catalog
The MIT Course Catalog is the Institute's official course catalogue. It describes courses and programs of study at MIT, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This issue is published annually in September. Ordering information can be found at Getting a Copy.
