MITAAH Constitution
(MIT Atheists, Agnostics, and Humanists)

Article I: Purpose

1.1.1 To provide an open and supportive environment for atheists, agnostics, and Humanists
         to discuss issues of relevance to freethinkers.
1.1.2 To promote the ideals of Humanism, including responsibility, rational thought, and the
         inherent worth of humanity.
1.1.3 To organize activities; such as forums for discussion, guest speakers, and organized
         debates; and to educate the MIT and surrounding community about atheism, agnosticism,
         Humanism, and other secular world views.
1.1.4 To protect and defend the rights of freethinkers on campus, if necessary.

Article II: Membership

Article III: Officers

3.1.1 President
3.1.1.1 The president shall be the official representative of the group to any other
            organization and to MIT.
3.1.1.2 The president shall plan and preside over all general and executive meetings,
            ensuring that these are scheduled at least once each month.
3.1.1.3 The president is responsible for ensuring that there is at least one general,
            executive, and social meeting each month, and at least one larger event each
            term.
3.1.1.4 The president shall maintain contact with the Campus Freethought Alliance
            (CFA) and attend or send a representative to the annual CFA conference.
3.1.1.5 The president shall maintain the MITAAH Association of Student Activities
            (ASA) file, attend ASA general meetings, and file required ASA forms.
3.1.2 Vice President
3.1.2.1 The vice president shall help preside over all general meetings, and will run
            meetings in the absence of the president.
3.1.2.2 The vice president is responsible for compiling and sending out MITAAH-News
            at least once each month.
3.1.3 Secretary
3.1.3.1 The secretary shall keep a log of minutes during all general and executive
            meetings, and publish the minutes of general meetings on the WWW.
3.1.3.2 The secretary shall take attendance at all meetings by way of a sign-in sheet.
3.1.3.3 The secretary shall maintain an accurate database of active members.
3.1.5 Treasurer
3.1.4.1 The treasurer shall be responsible for tracking the finances of the group.
3.1.4.2 The treasurer shall be required to sign all checks and vouchers of the group.
3.1.1.5 The treasurer shall maintain the online mailing lists.
3.1.4.4 The treasurer shall maintain the MITAAH web pages.

Article IV: Meetings

4.1 A general meeting shall be defined as any smaller-scale participatory activity run by
      MITAAH (excludes large lectures, debates, etc.).
4.2 General meetings shall be held at least once every month.
4.3 Any decisions regarding the group shall be made by a two-thirds majority vote of all
      members present at a general meeting.
4.4 The officers shall hold an executive meeting prior to each general meeting for planning
      purposes.

Article V: Amendments

6.1 Amendments may be presented by any member of the organization having attended at
      least two meetings.
6.2 Amendments shall be passed by a two-thirds majority vote of the members present.
6.3 Quorum for amending this constitution shall be one-third of all members of the 
      organization; this constitution may not be amended at the first general meeting of the
      fall term.

Article VI: ASA God Clause

The MIT Atheists, Agnostics, and Humanists agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of the Association of Student Activities, and its executive board, as required for ASA recognition. This constitution, amendments to it, and the by-laws of this organization shall be subject to review by the ASA Executive Board to insure that they are in accordance with the aforementioned rules and regulations.

Article VII: CFA Agreement Clause

The MIT Atheists, Agnostics, and Humanists agrees to abide by the following statement as required for CFA membership:

The Campus Freethought Alliance (CFA) includes member organizations that are openly non-theistic, skeptical of supernatural views of reality, or humanistic, i.e., respectful of personal freedom and affirming of the right and responsibility of humans to give meaning and shape to their own lives. They do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or any other distinctions irrelevant to the principles outlined above. The CFA and its member organizations do not encourage or participate in any pro-theistic, anti-skeptical, or anti-humanistic activities.
