The Broken Obelisk

where the sky meets steel
at one single point
you might think the pressure of the heavens would be too much to bear
and yet, we found unexpected lightness there
along the rough edges
where love upends violence

perhaps a new spirit is rising among us
let us trace its movements
in the lamplight, moonlight, daylight
breakage in balance with silence

~ beloved community of martin luther king jr ~
Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people.
Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding.
The purpose of nonviolence is the creation of the Beloved Community.
Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people.
Nonviolence resists violence of the spirit as well as of the body.
Love restores community and resists injustice.
-- from a handout on non-violence and civil disobedience that cathy put together

our world turned upside down (in a good way)
many different ways of seeing it
the fluidity of water (or light) (spirit) + the solidity of stone (body) together

Sarah

(in conversation with the sculpture)

hey again, you in the lamplight, moonlight, daylight
here we are again in unruffled self-sufficiency
what do we do with those rough edges
how do you balance on that tiny point
oh I see
your inflection is wider than you are

Luke

where the sky meets the earth
at but one single point
You might think the pressure of the heavens would be too much bear
and yet, I found unexpected lightness there
For what does the sky weigh?

Iteration 2

Sarah

hey again you in the lamplight, moonlight, daylight
here we are again in unruffled self-sufficiency
what do we do with those rough edges?
how do you balance on one single point?
you might think the pressure of the heavens would be too much to bear
and yet, there’s unexpected lightness there
love in light of brokenness
in spite of violence
we go deep to go forward

Luke

Steely as a mountain, love resists violence of the spirit
and holds up the moonlight

Talking about breaking

I like em all ,
Where breakage balances on silence
Where breakage balances silence
Where breakage meets silence
Where breakage touches silence nice but not as sounding good
Where breakage joins silence
Balances on
Breakage in balance with silence like this too < sounds better
Where silence breaks
Where breakage… greets? Silence :P
Touches (thinking about the meeting point int eh sculpture)
Where _ meets _ , and _
The comment below that brokenness and silence aren’t mutually exclusive, you can be (non)violent in your love and not shout (break the silence)
Where breakage meets silence, and __ . idk yea, where love upends violence and breakage meets silence
(and break the betrayal of our own silences?)
> The first two lines are also completely new thrown in so i imagine you might want to change those? This is what i thought about them. Idk if you want to keep them
“tracing the movements of the new spirit (of upending love along rough edges) *in the different lights, is like the layering multifold way the sculpture looks in your mind
a moment to see all its presences”
> And break our own silences?
Idk if this fits with the image or the experience of sitting there at the sculpture? One experience it fits with, is when you exit the chapel and come out where the sculpture is and in the day time there are lots of people around chatting and its a very different vibe. Thats a nice friendly breaking silence
It’s silent at night which is nice in the lamplight, daylight bit

Yeah exiting the chapel definitely doesn’t feel like a “break the betrayal of your silence” kind of silence-breaking. And also + the literal silence of the whole space at night feels like one of the things that makes it seem even more powerful so idk I feel conflicted about silence breaking.
But like the actual statue feels visually silence breaking
Like imagine if there was just some water there… and it would be like. Mmmm nice, some water.

Yeah, you walk out, there’s a reflecting pool and this massive heavy potentially precarious rent (as in, broken) thing plopped there, but somehow despite all of those “violent” qualities (its heaviness, the precariousness, the breakage) it is still… spiritually quiet in its heaviness, it does not break your (as observer’s) silence that u carry with u out of the meditation space (chapel)

hmm
So we do want breaking in there? Luke says yes
Well the thing is broken so , yes

I like breaking and i like silence but I don’t like breaking silence
^_^
Me neither

Lololo
Separate them more, don’t need to be so together, i think
What is the message that this last sentence wants to communicate? Using other words:

I think you trace its movements through all the kinds of light to make it something deeper in you by seeing all its various manifestations / transformations // so maybe loving as breaking and loving as the feeling out of the meditation spce

Breaking in silence? With silence? Through silence? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There’s something very powerful in nonviolent resistance about how you don’t have to be like fucking shouting

Brokenness is not orthogonal to quietness +
