Schmidt" Steve Ellis met with us and described the Load Balancer software that he has been using. It is the simplest and least expensive in a line of products that manage batch queues. The major areas where we need to do some investigation or take action are: Hardware, Software, Kerberos/tickets, Control group of customers HARDWARE: We will see if we can get two spare SPARCclassics to use as a prototype for testing. If things work well, we will consider the purchase of one or two higher end SPARC's (e.g. dual processor SPARC10 or SPARC20). SOFTWARE: Steve will take a look at what other products are available that have similar functionality as Load Balancer. If none of the other products have any stand-out advantages, we will contact the vendor of LB to get a copy. Steve will also find out whether it is shrink wrapped or requires a signed license. KERBEROS: Tom will talk with Jeff and Ted about the idea of having the Batch server to get tickets to access a semi-Public directory in the user's filespace. CONTRL GROUP: If we get something in place for September, we will work with a small number of courses to try this out as a pilot. We will work with TAs so that they can be trained to provide direct user support. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, July 12 at 2 PM. ------- End of Forwarded Message
