Schmidt" Yoav has been working to prepare a Sun SPARC5 to be a dial-up type machine in preparation for its christening as Patriot2 - e.g. closing security holes. He is also working on an install script to make it more manageable. Once that is done, all that needs to be added are the Patriot 'submit' and cleanup functions. It is expected that it will be ready by Sept 1 for Miki to start doing some work on it, and at the very latest by Sept 15 for testing of the Patriot configuration and software. One last thing that needs to be done before such a machine goes into production is hacking the kernel to do logging for security purposes, but that is not needed for friendly test. Steve will be finished benchmarking the multiprocessor SPARC20 in his department by the end of this week. Naomi has gotten a quote from Dennis ($28,002 for a 4 processor SPARC 20 with 256 Meg RAM and 4 GIG disk) and will wait until Steve has finished his benchmarking before placing the order. She will ask Dennis for the expected delivery time, and if it's more than 3 weeks she will place the order ASAP. Gerd Ceder (FELT) was suggested as a pilot tester. Steve has ideas for a few other Engineering subjects in our pilot. David Lukas will be available to automate the analysis of system accounting logging. Suggested statistics that we gather include: Clock time per job CPU time per job Clock/CPU time per user Clock/CPU time per subject Peak simultaneous use as a function of time of day Peak simultaneous use as a function of time of semester Applications that are run: Matlab Adina othe third party applications none of the above (presumably compiled home-grown binaries) ------- End of Forwarded Message
