    My daughter Jessica, who was five when I was commissioned in the Air
Force, was determined to master military jargon.  Along with her
kindergarten classmates at the base, she was learning new terms every
day, including the ranks of officers and enlisted personnel.

    One morning she watched me look through the telephone book for the
squadron noncom's number.
    "You won't find his number there," she told me, "Sergeants are
unlisted."
