To: carolingia@bloom-beacon.mit.edu cc: mitgaard fcc:+outbox3 Subject: In Persona Lectures, this Tuesday -------- Sorry for the late notice! Everyone is invited! ******************************************** What: Three Lectures In Persona (UofC-IAP) When: This Tuesday, January 22, 7 - 8:00 PM Where: At MIT, room 4-163 (directions below) ******************************************** Our three lecturers are Mara Tudora Kolarova, Kali von Aschehyrst, and Deirdre the Good. They'll each give a short (10 minute) lecture from their persona's perspective (University of Carolingia style), after which there will be questions and answers (perspective varied). Refreshments will be provided! The Topics: "Dowries and Inheritance" Mara will speak as the daughter of Diego Martinez, of the faculty of law at the University of Salamanca, who is ill and could not attend the lectures (circa 1290). This lecture will primarily be context and setup for the law (from 13th-c charters of 2 towns in central Spain) that specified that a woman who married without her father's consent was disinherited. The immediate modern reaction is "that's not fair", but in the context of that culture, it actually works out to be an advantage for women. "On the Great Schism in the Papacy : Origins and Solutions" Kali speaks as Calius Arlani, of the Faculty of Canon Law It is the year of grace 1410, and Western Europe has not one, not two, but three Popes. This schism has not sprung from arguments of theology but rather of procedure. How did we get into this mess, and how can we get out? Two principles of Canon Law urged by the University of Paris offer new hope: Total Subtraction of Obedience, and Conciliar Supremacy. "The Bardic Tradition" Deirdre will be a 15th century scotts bard, playing the lap harp. The talk will touch on early music (modes, form, etc.), the history of the harp and bardic traditions, and the origins of harp circles. If you'd like more information about any of these topics, email me or any of the speakers: Mara at Meredith.Courtney@comverse.com, Kali at caleb_hanson@us.ibm.com, and Deirdre at dgrees@theworld.com. Thanks! - Myndroh Directions to MIT 4-163: There are two sets of directions below: the basic directions from the front entry of MIT at 77 Massachusetts Ave, and directions from the Council room (6-120) for those folks who have figured out the better parking to be had near there. GENERAL CONCEPTIAL DIRECTIONS: Room 4-163 is on a side corridor off the Infinite Corridor, to the right one intersection past Lobby 10, the war memorial lobby. DIRECTIONS from 77 Massachusetts Ave.: Enter, and proceed across lobby and into corridor on far side. This is the Infinite Corridor (main MIT landmark). Proceed past one intersection, and on through a smaller lobby (Lobby 10). At the next major instersection, turn right. Near the end of the corridor, on the left is 4-163. DIRECTIONS from Council room (6-120): Go back up to the Infinite Corridor, and head down it (you're at the end, there's only one direction to go) to the next intersection. Turn left. Near the end of the corridor, on the left is 4-163. IF YOU GET LOST ask a native. Room is pronounced "Four, One Sixty Three". Articulated thus, natives will know where that it.
