Journal for 2003 September 16
Claudia laid it out for me: you're spending too much time working for Olin, and I won't put up with it. I don't know how much time is reasonable for working for Olin, but recently the reality has been something like 12 hours / Olin day (MTRF), and 2-4 hours / non-Olin day. I've enjoyed it, and I wouldn't want a job that's contained between 9 in the morning and 5 in the evening. It's far too exciting for me to throw myself into something. However, my relationship with Claudia is more important. The current plan is to try to get everything done at Olin or on the commutes. I can probably ask for 30 minutes to virtually be at Olin in the evenings, but I have a responsibility to her stronger than my responsibility to my students, and the evening is the time to develop that responsibility.

I got my first Olin paycheck today, and it's an enormous relief to be solvent again. For its use, I plan on splitting it as follows:

My birthday is tomorrow. Claudia has promised distracting gifts. I don't know yet if I can go back to Lowell to visit my parents. For my birthday, I plan on just going to various places with which I associate and bring Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
