Unicycling, or, Actually, it was a Tricycle before the
accident
It's not just a hobby, it's a way of life! I started riding unicycles
when I was a frosh at Harvey Mudd College, in the fall of 1991. At
the time, there were maybe 8-10 people in Gonzo Unicycle
Madness, the unicycle club at HMC. I was the only woman in the
club at the time. Now, several years later, the club has over 40
members & 7 or 8 women, & they expect to have many more on both counts
next year! I was The Officer of the club in 1993-94, and I was
treasurer and Checkmeister the next year. I'm an okay rider for HMC--
I can freemount, ride backwards, hop, hover, and do dance stuff. I
learned to keep my balance on a giraffe in May of 1995, so I can add
that to my resume. I ride my uni occasionally in Boston, not nearly
as often as I did at Mudd. :^( I have gone back to Mudd twice in the
last 3 years to participate in the annual Foster's
Run, though, so I'm not completely without unicycling in my
life.
We at Gonzo Unicycle Madness found out about the International Unicycling Home
Page, which is a great place to find out about what other people
are doing with unicycling, what kinds of tricks you can learn to do
with/on a uni, and to find out just who else goes around on one
wheel.
The charter for Gonzo Unicycle
Madness is quite amusing-- have a look!
Here is a picture of me
on my uni (the same one that's on my homepage).
I maintain a page dedicated to the alumni of Gonzo Unicycle Madness
and the HMC Unicycle Club. If you're an alum or know an alum of the
club, drop me a line!.
Death Valley Run!
In December of 1997, Cliff, Jim, Amelia, & I finally did one of the
items on my "Cool Things to Do before Leaving California" list.... We
drove to Badwater, Death Valley, to
unicycle at the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere. Hey, I never
said I wasn't crazy....
