Mark Belson
No enrollment limit, no advance sign up
Participants welcome at individual sessions (series)
For those diehard souls who "prefer" to believe Herman Melville's classic tale "Bartleby, the Scrivener" is the best American short story ever written - a marathon week screening virtually every extant dramatic adaptation of this mesmerizing story - Melville's "great spooky conception" as movie critic Pauline Kael puts it - committed to film or video since 1962. Film versions made in America, England and France will be screened. All five have rarely been seen. Two are feature-length films which will open and close this Bartlebys Back Through Time Festival. Attendees will be eligible to win one of 5 audiocassettes of the entire novella in a random free raffle at week's end.

Volcanoes in downtown L. A.? Killer rocks from outer space? Fearless tornado-hunters? None of that could really happen, right? Hollywood tries to make sure that the dialogue and effects are accurate enough to make you think that it could. But how close do these spectacular displays of science come to the goal of plausibility? This is an informal seminar series where participants can watch a few of these films and discuss these sorts of issues.
