Coffeehouse Provincetown Trip

Mark your calendars. On the first weekend of August, the Rainbow Coffeehouse takes you out to the Gay Mecca of the east coast - Provincetown!

When: August 6th.
Meals: The Rainbow Coffeehouse will sponsor a picnic by the beach on Saturday. You will pay for your own meals for the rest of the stay (unless you find a sugar-daddy or sugar-momma).
For those of you who do not know anything about P'town (I've gotta be kiddin'), it's a lot of fun with beaches, clubs, art galleries and hiking/biking options.... in short, a great weekend getaway!

Coffeehuose Picnic and Canoeing trip on the Charles

Join us for a day outdoors. The Rainbow Coffeehouse takes you for a picnic by the Charles. Come and hang out with friends, bask in the sunshine and stroll along the river. After a picnic lunch (sponsored by the coffeehouse), we will be canoeing in the Charles (rentals subsidized by the Coffeehouse). Please RSVP so that we have an idea of how many people to plan for.

"All that you wanted to know about (Gay) sex - But were afraid to ask!"


The Rainbow Coffeehouse invites you for a very special evening - "All that you wanted to know about (Gay) sex - But were afraid to ask". After last year's successful safe sex event (look at the bottom of this page for the link to the Globe article on it), the coffeehouse calls in the experts again. This time we tackle the very basic questions about the birds and the bees that your sex-ed classes forgot to mention. Join us for an Indian dinner and a fun 'n enlightening session of a gameshow that shoots from the hip (excuse the expression) and takes the bull by the horns while discussing the issue.

As warm-up events for the upcoming mega-event Fierce Forever V, we bring you two workshops aimed at providing you the necessary level of expertise for getting out there and wowing them all. Hired professionals along with local students will teach you all that you need about the skills of special make-up, and carrying off drag (lipsync, dancing, look etc...).For these workshops, participants will receive full makeup but will need to bring opposite gender clothing.This event is sponsored by the Rainbow Coffeehouse, QWiLLTS, GAMIT and the UA.

Rainbow Coffeehouse Cultural Night: An evening with David Sedaris - Limited Tickets!

He's here! And he's going to make you laugh your pants off! The Rainbow Coffeehouse takes you out for an evening of unbridled fun as part of the celebrity series events, featuring popular NPR commentator and best-selling author, David Sedaris (of 'Naked' and 'Me Talk Pretty One Day' fame). The $27 tickets were being sold for only $17 and were available on a 'first come-first serve' basis and sold out in 45 minutes flat! Even the extra tickets ordered for the waitlist disappeared faster than you could say, "Me Talk Pretty One Day".

Provincetown Quick-Trip

In the tradition of our earlier successful trips to the queer Mecca of the east coast, the Rainbow Coffeehouse organized an extremely successful trip to Provincetown right in the middle of summer. We had a blast lazing around on the beach, biking in the trails, scoping out the galleries and laughing our guts out at the drag performance, "The Girl with a Pearl Necklace". The trip was on a 'pay for yourself' basis and the gas charges for the car-pool were borne by the Coffeehouse.

Coffeehouse Picnic

Take a break after the last day of classes and join the Rainbow Coffeehouse on a day trip to the Great outdoors. We are heading out on a picnic to the Hopkinton State Park. See park website for details on venue. Since the number of cars would be limited, please RSVP to Ajit at drajit at mit dot edu if you want to join us for this picnic. Also indicate if you have a car or could drive someone else's car.

The Rainbow Coffeehouse co-sponsored an evening of music with young and upcoming singer GREGORY DOUGLASS. The performance was free, and followed a workshop on bisexuality by Dorian Solot. All That You Wanted to Know About (Safer) Sex -- But Were Afraid to Ask!

The Rainbow Coffeehouse brought in experts to have a no-holds barred discussion over a 'stimulating' Thai dinner. The event was a big success and featured an adventurous big-screen game along the lines of 'Jeopardy!'. The lounge was packed with people and included Sam Allis, reporter from the Boston Globe. Sam featured the event in his column 'The Observer' on page 2 of the Sunday Globe on 8th February. Click here to access the original article published in the Globe.

More "Angels"

The Rainbow Coffeehouse followed up on the previous week's social. Folks gathered at the Rainbow Lounge to socialize over refreshments before the movie, which was shown in a wonderfully plush theater. We were pleasantly surprised to see many new faces, despite the record-breaking frigid temperatures outside. Congratulations to Mitch, who won a pair of passes to Loews Theater in a random drawing.

Holiday Concert of the Boston Gay Men's Chorus

The Rainbow Coffeehouse headed out to the Holiday Concert of the Boston Gay Men's Chorus at New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall. The $12 tickets, offered at a subdized price of $5, sold out quickly.

Screening of "Die, Mommie, Die!"

The Rainbow Coffeehouse headed out to Town to catch a screening of Die, Mommie, Die!. This campy comedy stars Charles Busch as the delightful Angela Arden, who kills her much-hated husband to be with her young lover, played by Jason Priestly. Her daughter then plots her revenge. The movie also features a hot kiss between Jason Priestly and the adorable Stark Sands!

The Coffeehouse sponsored a limited number of free tickets for the movie on a first come, first serve basis.

Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner

A week before Thanksgiving, the Coffeehouse held a special pre-holiday dinner at the Rainbow Lounge for friends and "family". The traditional meal featured turkey, stuffing, mashed potatos, gravy, sweet corn, baked penne with broccoli, cornbread, fresh pie, and of course good company!

Mridu Chandra and "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin"

The Rainbow Coffeehouse was proud to co-sponsor a discussion with producer Mridu Chandra following a special screening of her award-winning film "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin". Bayard Rustin has been described as the man with the plan and ideas behind the March on Washington in which Martin Luther King delivered his "I have a Dream" speech. He was an important member of the Civil Rights movement and has a powerful life story that includes his multiple identities as a gay, African American, political activist. The film chronicles his life and his accomplishments.

"Butley", starring Nathan Lane

The MIT BGALA and RAINBOW COFFEEHOUSE were pleased to present a Theater Night for "Butley", starring Nathan Lane, at the Huntington Theater. The Huntington Theatre held an "Out & About" performance specifically for the LBGT community, with a special cocktail reception after the show. The event was, not surprisingly, an astounding success, especially with the subsidized tickets sold for $15 as opposed to the normal $43.

Pool Night at Flat Top Johnny's

The Rainbow Coffeehouse organized a free 'Pool Night' with drinks and appetizers at Flat Top Johnny's, which also included watching the nail-biting Game 7 of the ALCS. Although the Sox disappointed, the turnout didn't, with about 30 guys and gals showing off their skills on the pool tables. As for the Sox, well, maybe next year. This event was made possible in part by generous help from BGALA, the alumni LBGT association.

Margaret Cho @ MIT

The Rainbow Coffeehouse was delighted to be part of the hospitality committee for Margaret Cho during her historic tour of MIT. Her sold-out performance and Q&A session in Kresge Auditorium were taped for one of her upcoming films--watch for it at your local theatre! After the performance, the Coffeehouse members took Margaret Cho's hilarious opening act, Bruce, to Club Cafe to get him acquainted with the Boston scene. Click here for photos.

Movie Night

The first Coffeehouse Movie Night for the term was well attended. After a reception at the Rainbow lounge, we proceeded to watch an emotional tear-jerker before heading out into the town.

Boston Harbor Trip

The Rainbow Coffeehouse organized a day trip to the Boston Harbor Islands on the 10th of August (Sunday). A group of us spent a warm sunny day picnicing at George's Island followed by a trek through Peddock Island.
