"To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible."

Up until 2001, CoSIDA selected All-America teams in four different programs for women: Basketball, Softball, Volleyball and At-Large.  Beginning in 2002, the number of programs was expanded to six, adding Soccer and Track & Field/Cross Country.  A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.  The At-Large teams now incorporate Fencing, Field Hockey, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rifle, Rowing, Skiing, Swimming/Diving, Tennis and Waterpolo. Unlike the other five programs which accept an unlimited number of nominees per school, the At-Large program accepts a maximum of three nominees from a possible 12 different sports.

Since 1983 when the first NCAA Gymnastics Championships were held and gymnasts began getting nominated for this honor, there have been 130 Academic All-American selections.  That amounts to a better than 5.9 recipients over the 22 year span.  The highest total came in 1996 and 2003 with 11 selections, followed by 1997 and 2002 with 9 selections.  Twenty-six gymnasts have been selected at least twice, including seven of them who have achieved the maximum Three-Time Academic All-American honor.  University of Nebraska leads the way with 12 selections from 8 different athletes.  University of Alabama is second with 10 selections from 7 different athletes respectively.
