Director's Note
How does one perform The Taming of the Shrew in 1999? Even if we try to
see the play from an "historical" perspective, the attitude towards women
in this play is difficult to stomach. And yet, perspectives can be helpful
nonetheless, perhaps when a production acknowledges that the story is open
to a number of interpretations, depending on the perspective from which
the action is viewed. This production attempts to do just that, and so
the story of Kate's "taming" is told twice, once from a woman's
perspective, her sister Bianca's, and once from a man's, her new
brother-in-law Lucentio's. Who's right? Who's wrong? Was she shamed or
tamed? Is there a difference? That's for you to decide.
